Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the nationwide awareness campaign titled “आपकी पूँजी, आपका अधिकार” (Your Money, Your Right) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The event was attended by Gujarat State Finance Minister Shri Kanubhai Desai, Secretary DFS Shri M. Nagaraju, RBI Executive Director, and top officials from IRDAI, SEBI, PFRDA, and leading financial institutions.
Campaign Focus and Core Principles
The campaign addresses unclaimed financial assets like deposits, insurance proceeds, dividends, mutual fund balances, and pensions—representing hard-earned savings of ordinary families. Smt. Sitharaman emphasized the campaign’s foundation on the “3 A’s”:
-
Awareness: Informing every citizen how to trace unclaimed assets.
-
Accessibility: Providing simplified digital tools and district-level outreach.
-
Action: Ensuring timely, transparent claim settlements.
These principles aim to bridge the gap between citizens and financial institutions, enabling rightful savings to be reclaimed with ease and dignity.
Government Initiatives and Support
The Finance Minister lauded the proactive role of regional rural banks, particularly Gujarat Gramin Bank, whose recent KYC and re-KYC efforts have maintained strong citizen connections to the formal financial system. Certificates were awarded to beneficiaries who successfully reclaimed unclaimed deposits.
Scale and Impact
As of August 2025, unclaimed deposits exceeding ₹75,000 crore have been transferred to RBI’s Depositor Education and Awareness Fund. Additional unclaimed funds include ₹13,800 crore in insurance proceeds, ₹3,000 crore in mutual funds, and over ₹9,000 crore in unpaid dividends. Nearly 172 crore shares are held in the Investor Education and Protection Fund.
Campaign Implementation and Vision
Scheduled from October to December 2025 across all states and UTs, the campaign will feature digital demonstrations and helpdesks to assist citizens in tracing and claiming unclaimed assets. It reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent governance and financial empowerment of every household.
Conclusion by Smt Nirmala Sitharaman
“आपकी पूँजी, आपका अधिकार” embodies the government’s promise to restore citizens’ rightful savings and enhance financial inclusion. It encourages proactive participation to ensure unclaimed assets benefit those to whom they rightfully belong.
