NEW DELHI: In a decisive statement ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal has firmly ruled out the possibility of an alliance with the Congress. Despite media speculations about a potential collaboration under the INDIA bloc, Kejriwal clarified on X (formerly Twitter), “There is no possibility of any alliance with the Congress.”
This announcement comes amid a politically charged atmosphere, with the elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly expected in February 2025. AAP, which has dominated Delhi’s political landscape since 2013, has consistently maintained its stance of fighting elections independently. The party has already released two lists of candidates for 31 constituencies, with the remaining names expected soon.
The alliance rumors gained traction after the Congress canceled its “Nyay Chaupal” event, which was to be graced by Rahul Gandhi. The program was part of the Congress’ “Nyay Yatra,” aimed at rallying support ahead of the polls. Kejriwal, however, dismissed these developments, focusing instead on the AAP’s achievements and its governance model.
Meanwhile, the BJP, which has been out of power in Delhi since 1998, is gearing up to challenge AAP. The saffron party is strategizing extensively to regain influence, especially after its lackluster performance in the 2015 and 2020 elections, where it secured only three and eight seats, respectively.
The INDIA bloc’s internal dynamics have also seen a shake-up, with Kejriwal recently meeting NCP leader Sharad Pawar. Discussions reportedly included the bloc’s leadership and strategy but did not address Delhi elections directly. The meeting underscored the complex equations within the alliance, as parties weigh local priorities against the collective opposition narrative.
As Delhi braces for another high-stakes electoral battle, the political landscape remains as dynamic as ever, with AAP reiterating its focus on delivering governance over alliances.
