Noida: In a recent incident, Noida bus overturns after the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. The mishap occurred in the early hours of 17th February, 2025, when the vehicle, carrying approximately 35 passengers, veered off course and toppled near Noida. Preliminary investigations suggest that driver fatigue was the primary cause of the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was traveling at a considerable speed when it suddenly swerved, collided with a divider, and overturned. Passengers were jolted awake by the impact, leading to moments of chaos and confusion. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and the injured were transported to hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, but several individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to more serious conditions.

This incident is not isolated; similar accidents have occurred in the region due to driver fatigue. For instance, in 2023, a bus driver allegedly dozed off, leading to a collision with a tractor-trolley on the Yamuna Expressway near Greater Noida, resulting in injuries to 13 passengers.

In another case, a bus veered off the Yamuna Expressway and plunged into a deep drain, killing 29 people; the driver had probably fallen asleep when the vehicle was at high speed.

Authorities have consistently emphasized the importance of adequate rest for drivers, especially those operating commercial vehicles over long distances. Fatigue impairs reaction times and decision-making abilities, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Transport companies are urged to enforce strict schedules that allow drivers sufficient rest periods and to educate them on the dangers of drowsy driving.

In response to the recent accident, [Local Transport Authority] has announced plans to implement more rigorous monitoring of driver schedules and rest periods. Random checks will be conducted to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, there is a proposal to install advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in commercial vehicles. These systems can detect signs of driver drowsiness and issue timely alerts, potentially preventing such incidents.

Passengers are also encouraged to remain vigilant. If they observe any signs of driver fatigue, such as frequent yawning, drifting between lanes, or erratic driving, they should not hesitate to speak up or report their concerns to the transport company. Collective awareness and proactive measures are essential in ensuring road safety for all.

The recent incident of Noida bus overturns serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with driver fatigue. It underscores the urgent need for systemic changes in the transportation industry, focusing on driver welfare and the adoption of technological solutions to enhance safety. As investigations continue, it is imperative that both transport operators and regulatory bodies collaborate to prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring the well-being of passengers and drivers alike.
