Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring his commitment to conduct elections in the Union Territory. Speaking at the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel, Abdullah highlighted the significance of the timely elections and appealed for the reinstatement of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdullah recalled PM Modi’s assurance during International Yoga Day in Srinagar, where he pledged to hold elections, enabling residents to elect their government. “You fulfilled your promise, and polls were held within four months. A new government was elected, and the result is, as chief minister, I am talking to you here,” Abdullah stated.

He emphasized the enthusiastic public participation in the elections, noting the absence of complaints regarding rigging or misuse of power. Abdullah also reminded the Prime Minister of his promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, expressing confidence that this commitment would soon be realized.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the positive impact of PM Modi’s efforts on the peace process along the borders, benefiting remote areas such as Machil, Gurez, Karnah, and Keran through development and increased tourism.

Regarding the Z-Morh tunnel, Abdullah highlighted its role in providing year-round road connectivity, eliminating the need for residents from upper regions to travel to the plains during adverse weather conditions. He also paid tribute to the seven civilians involved in the tunnel’s construction who were killed by terrorists in Gagangir last year.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, enhancing all-weather access to the Sonamarg tourist resort. The project, constructed at a cost exceeding Rs.2,700 crore, includes a two-lane bi-directional road and a parallel 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Z-Morh tunnel is expected to boost tourism and economic development in the region by ensuring uninterrupted connectivity to Sonamarg throughout the year.
