The parents of the trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata earlier this year have moved the Calcutta High Court, requesting a fresh investigation into the case. The victim’s parents expressed a lack of confidence in the ongoing investigation and have sought a court order for a new probe into their daughter’s tragic death, which sparked widespread protests across the region.
On Thursday, the petition was heard by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who instructed the victim’s lawyer to include the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the petition as a party to the case. The matter has been scheduled for a hearing on Monday, December 23.
The incident occurred on August 9, when the body of the on-duty postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The prime suspect in the case is Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer.
Recently, on December 13, the Sealdah court granted bail to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge at Tala police station. They were granted bail after the CBI failed to file charges within the required 90-day period. Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence, while Mondal allegedly delayed the filing of an FIR after the victim’s body was found.
The CBI has, however, filed a charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, who is accused of committing the crime when the victim was resting in the seminar room during a break.
