Legendary Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce was conferred the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI 2024), held in Goa. This esteemed recognition honors his outstanding contributions to global cinema and his masterful storytelling over a career spanning more than five decades.
Noyce, whose critically acclaimed works include The Quiet American, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Salt, and Patriot Games, expressed his gratitude for the award during an inspiring acceptance speech. He praised Satyajit Ray as an unparalleled cinematic visionary and credited storytelling as a universal bridge that connects humanity.

As part of the festival, Noyce also conducted a masterclass titled “How to Succeed in New Hollywood.” He shared his journey from a young filmmaker inspired by circus life to becoming a celebrated Hollywood director. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, strong writing, and innovative filmmaking, stating, “A director is only as good as their script.” Noyce also highlighted the value of trust among film crews and leveraging modern technology to create impactful films, even on limited budgets.
The 2024 IFFI showcased over 180 films from 81 countries, including 15 world premieres, cementing its status as one of Asia’s premier film festivals. The opening film, Better Man, a semi-autobiographical story about British pop icon Robbie Williams, set the tone for the event. The festival also featured discussions, workshops, and tributes to iconic filmmakers, further fostering global cinematic exchange.
