PIA Faces Operational Crisis as 17 Aircraft Grounded Due to Component Shortages

Breaking News

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is grappling with severe operational challenges as 17 of its 34 aircraft remain grounded, primarily due to a lack of critical spare parts. The situation impacts both domestic and international operations, placing the national carrier under intense financial strain.

Among the grounded aircraft, 7 of the 12 Boeing 777s are out of service, along with 7 of the 17 Airbus A320 planes. Additionally, 3 out of 5 ATR aircraft are non-operational. These issues arise from shortages in essential components, such as engines and landing gear, compounded by years of cannibalizing parts from other aircraft. This practice has only worsened the airline’s capacity to maintain its fleet.

PIA’s struggles come at a time when it is planning to resume European flights in January 2025, following the lifting of a four-year ban by the European Union. However, the grounded aircraft threaten to delay or disrupt these operations.

Financially, PIA faces a debt burden of approximately $2.9 billion, with losses mounting due to operational inefficiencies. To alleviate these issues, the Pakistani government is advancing privatization efforts, with the process expected to conclude soon. The airline’s future hinges on effective management, timely procurement of parts, and strategic reforms.
