India’s Naval Fleet Gets a Boost

In a historic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three advanced naval combatants — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — at the Mumbai dockyard. This milestone highlights India’s growing maritime strength, self-reliance in defense, and its role as a reliable partner in the global maritime community.

Vision for a Secure Indo-Pacific

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi reiterated India’s vision of “development over expansionism” and emphasized the nation’s commitment to a secure, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. He stated, “India does not follow expansionism (vistarwad) but works with the spirit of development (vikaswad). Whether it is land, water, air, the deep sea, or infinite space, India is safeguarding its interests everywhere.”

Highlighting India’s growing maritime influence, Modi noted that the country is recognized as the “first responder” in the Indian Ocean Region. The commissioning of these vessels, he said, marks a significant step in empowering the Indian Navy for 21st-century challenges.

The “SAGAR” Mantra and Global Contributions

PM Modi underlined India’s philosophy of “SAGAR” — Security and Growth for All in the Region. He linked this vision to the country’s inclusive global initiatives, including “One Earth, One Family, One Future” during the G20 presidency and “One Earth, One Health” during the pandemic.

He emphasized the importance of protecting maritime routes for economic growth, energy security, and trade. Modi warned against threats like terrorism, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking, urging stronger efforts to secure the region for a safe and prosperous maritime environment.

Honoring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Self-Reliance

January 15 was marked as a historic day for naval self-reliance, with Modi paying tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for his pioneering contributions to maritime defense. “For the first time, a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine have been commissioned on the same day. It is a matter of pride that all these platforms are made in India,” Modi remarked.

He also celebrated the Navy’s transition to self-reliance, noting, “Our forces have identified over 5,000 items that no longer need to be imported. This is a testament to India’s commitment to ‘atmanirbharta.’”

Newly Commissioned Vessels

The three combatants represent the pinnacle of India’s naval capabilities:

  • INS Surat: The final vessel of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, featuring 75% indigenous content and advanced weapon-sensor systems.
  • INS Nilgiri: The lead ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, equipped with cutting-edge stealth capabilities.
  • INS Vaghsheer: The sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, showcasing India’s expertise in submarine construction.

Economic Impact of Naval Expansion

PM Modi highlighted the economic benefits of India’s defense projects, stating that every Rs.1 invested in shipbuilding generates Rs.1.82 in returns. Currently, 60 vessels are under construction, with an investment of Rs.1.5 lakh crore, contributing nearly Rs.3 lakh crore to the economy.

He commended Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders for their significant contributions, including the construction of 33 ships and seven submarines. Modi also highlighted India’s growing role as a defense exporter, supplying equipment to over 100 nations.

Conclusion

The commissioning of INS Surat, Nilgiri, and Vaghsheer reflects India’s progress toward self-reliance in defense and its growing maritime influence. These combatants not only enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities but also signify the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial and economic interests.
