New Delhi, 4 September 2025 — Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held a joint telephone discussion today with President of the European Council H.E. Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission H.E. Ursula von der Leyen. The leaders underscored the strong and close relationship between India and the European Union (EU), grounded in shared democratic values, trust, and a common vision for global stability and prosperity.

Progress in Key Areas of Bilateral Cooperation

During the call, the leaders welcomed significant progress in bilateral ties, particularly in sectors such as trade, technology, investment, innovation, sustainability, defence, security, and supply chain resilience. They reaffirmed their mutual commitment to an early conclusion of the long-pending India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and emphasized the effective implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).



Dialogue on Global and Regional Issues

The discussion explored regional and international challenges of mutual concern, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution and the early restoration of peace and stability in the region.

Invitation to India-EU Summit

Building on the momentum from the historic visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to both President Costa and President von der Leyen to visit India for the forthcoming India-EU Summit. The leaders agreed to maintain close communication as they advance cooperation across multiple fronts.

Strengthening a Rules-Based Order for Mutual Prosperity: Holding convos with European Council Leaders

The joint call emphasized the shared vision of India and the EU to promote a rules-based international order, jointly address global issues, and foster stability. The partnership between the world’s two largest democracies continues to grow, reflecting deepening economic ties and strategic convergence.
