A tragic incident unfolded at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj during the early hours of the “Shahi Snan” ritual, leading to a stampede that resulted in several injuries and fatalities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the victims and their families. “The accident that happened in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Stampede Details and Emergency Response
The stampede occurred as a large number of devotees gathered for the significant Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, which is expected to attract around 10 crore pilgrims. This year’s event is marked by a rare celestial alignment, ‘Triveni Yog,’ adding spiritual significance to the ritual.
At approximately 2 am, the sound of sirens from ambulances and police vehicles reverberated through the area as the stampede broke out. Many of the injured were rushed to a central hospital established at the Mela site, where relatives of the victims also gathered.
Spiritual Significance of the Kumbh
The Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, holds immense spiritual importance for Hindus. Devotees believe that taking a dip in the Sangam, especially on significant days like Mauni Amavasya, cleanses them of sins and grants ‘moksha’ or salvation.
PM Modi’s Response
Prime Minister Modi, in his message, emphasized the government’s response to the situation, saying, “The local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way. I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi ji and am constantly in touch with the state government.”
The authorities are continuing efforts to assist the victims, with emergency services and police mobilized in the aftermath of the tragic event.
