JAMMU & KASHMIR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development. This 6.5-kilometer tunnel is set to provide all-weather connectivity to the Sonamarg tourist resort, which was previously inaccessible during heavy snowfall.
Strategic Importance and Features
The Z-Morh Tunnel, constructed at a cost of ₹2,400 crore, is a two-lane bi-directional road tunnel situated at an elevation of 8,650 feet above sea level. It features an additional 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage running parallel to the main structure. This infrastructure is designed to facilitate uninterrupted travel between Gagangir and Sonamarg, significantly benefiting summer travel to Ladakh.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Development
The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to boost tourism in Sonamarg, which boasts attractions including the Thajiwas Glacier and activities such as whitewater rafting on the Sind River. The tunnel will also enhance social and economic development throughout the region.
Enhanced Security Measures
In light of previous attacks on tunnel workers by militants opposing Indian rule, authorities deployed police and soldiers in the area, establishing multiple checkpoints at key intersections as an enhanced security measure for the prime minister’s visit. Troops also stationed sharpshooters at several points and carried out drone surveillance to ensure constant vigilance.
Future Developments
The Z-Morh Tunnel works in conjunction with the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2026. Together, these projects will provide continuous access for both civilian and military vehicles to the Baltal and Ladakh areas, enhancing travel efficiency and road connectivity.
