Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, breathed his last at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after being admitted for emergency treatment.
Prime Minister Modi remembered Dr. Singh as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders” and a respected economist. In a post on X, Modi highlighted Singh’s remarkable rise from humble beginnings and praised his contributions to India’s economic policies. “Dr. Singh’s interventions in Parliament were insightful, and as Prime Minister, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people,” he wrote.
Recalling his interactions with Dr. Singh during their time in office, Modi shared that the two would often engage in discussions on governance when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and Dr. Singh was Prime Minister. “His wisdom and humility were always evident,” Modi added, offering his condolences to Dr. Singh’s family, friends, and admirers.
Dr. Manmohan Singh had been in poor health in recent months. A statement from AIIMS confirmed that despite immediate resuscitative efforts, Singh was declared dead at 9:51 PM after being admitted to the hospital at 8:06 PM.
Singh, a key figure in India’s 1991 economic reforms, served as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and is credited with rescuing India from an economic crisis, steering the country toward liberalization and growth.
