New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s farming community, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on August 2 from Varanasi, transferring ₹20,500 crore directly to the bank accounts of 9.7 crore farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The announcement came after a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in New Delhi. The meeting focused on ensuring smooth execution of the upcoming event and maximizing farmer participation nationwide.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, including Agriculture Secretary Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, ICAR Director General Dr. M.L. Jat, as well as Vice Chancellors, Directors, and Heads of 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), participated virtually in the strategic session.
‘Celebrate the Installment as a Festival and a Mission’: Chouhan
During the meeting, Shri Chouhan stressed the dual spirit of the event — as a celebration and a mission. He directed state and district-level officers to engage farmers from village to national level, leveraging grassroots functionaries such as:
-
Krishi Sakhis
-
Drone Didis
-
Bank Sakhis
-
Pashu Sakhis
-
Bima Sakhis
-
Gram Panchayat Sarpanches
“These field-level workers are instrumental in spreading awareness and ensuring last-mile delivery,” the minister said, adding that KVKs should begin early mobilisation efforts and interact with farmers on relevant issues such as Kharif cropping and insurance coverage.
Unprecedented Outreach Drive
In line with the Prime Minister’s vision for farmer empowerment and transparency, a nationwide campaign is being rolled out to:
-
Maximize DBT effectiveness
-
Create awareness about agricultural schemes
-
Promote digital literacy among farmers
-
Encourage participation in sustainable and tech-enabled practices
The Minister urged KVKs and agricultural universities to treat the occasion not just as a transaction but as a transformational opportunity to align farmers with India’s broader agricultural development goals.
PM-KISAN: A Lifeline for Indian Farmers
Launched in 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme provides ₹6,000 annually to small and marginal farmers in three installments of ₹2,000 each. So far, ₹3.69 lakh crore has been disbursed through 19 successful tranches.
With this 20th installment, the government is set to cross another milestone in ensuring financial security for India’s farmers while reinforcing its commitment to inclusive rural development.
Looking Ahead
The August 2 event is expected to be broadcast live across the country, with state-level events, community gatherings, and onsite support desks ensuring every eligible farmer receives their benefit promptly.
As India embraces technology-driven agriculture and greater rural digitization, initiatives like PM-KISAN continue to serve as cornerstones of farmer welfare and empowerment.
