Assam: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, underscored the transformative impact of the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme during a public program at Auniati Satra branch in Dibrugarh, Assam, on August 31, 2025. Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Sonowal stated the scheme embodies the commitment to never let down the poor and marks a significant step in making small traders self-reliant and financially empowered.
Robust Relief for Vendors Amid COVID-19
Sonowal highlighted how PM SVANidhi provided much-needed support when street vendors were severely affected by COVID-19 restrictions. The scheme enables banks to offer phased loans—starting ₹10,000, increasing to ₹20,000, and then ₹50,000 for those with prompt repayments. Borrowers also benefit from a 7% interest subsidy, with the repayment model designed to foster success among small traders.
He reflected on the scheme’s core purpose: “Self-reliance allows individuals to support their families with dignity. Prime Minister Modi envisioned this strength and created the PM SVANidhi scheme to empower the poor and marginalized.”
Direct Welfare Delivery vs. Past Leakages
Targeting the Congress party’s track record, Sonowal recalled former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s admission that only 16 paise out of every rupee reached the poor due to middlemen. “Prime Minister Modi has ensured every rupee sent by the government directly benefits the poor. His policies are guided by ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’,” Sonowal stated.
Janaushadhi Kendra Inauguration to Enhance Healthcare Affordability
Later in the day, Shri Sonowal inaugurated a Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra at Milan Nagar, Dibrugarh. This new centre will provide the public access to affordable, quality generic medicines, strengthening healthcare access for the local community.
The inauguration was attended by several dignitaries, including Assam Cabinet Minister Shri Prasanta Phukan, prominent MLAs, municipal leaders, and beneficiaries—demonstrating broad support for citizen-focused initiatives.
