MUMBAI: The murder of Massajog Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in Beed district has ignited political unrest in Maharashtra. Opposition parties are calling for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s resignation, citing the police’s failure to arrest prime suspect Walmik Karad until his recent surrender.
Karad, a close associate of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Minister Dhananjay Munde, turned himself in to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Pune on December 31, 2024. He faces charges in an extortion case linked to Deshmukh’s murder.
The delay in Karad’s arrest has intensified political tensions. Opposition leaders allege that the ruling government is shielding Karad due to his political connections. They demand Fadnavis’s resignation, accusing him of failing to ensure timely justice.
In response, Chief Minister Fadnavis has directed the CID to seize the properties of those involved in Deshmukh’s murder, aiming to demonstrate the government’s commitment to justice.
The case underscores concerns about law and order in Maharashtra, with opposition parties urging swift and impartial investigations to uphold justice.
