Filmmaker Prakash Jha recently met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to discuss the state’s new film policy, aimed at boosting film production in the region. The policy, which was introduced in 2024, is expected to make Uttarakhand a prime destination for filmmakers. During the meeting, Jha praised the state’s efforts to streamline the film production process through its single-window system, which simplifies permits for filmmakers. He expressed optimism that the new policy would help Uttarakhand gain more recognition in the film industry, attracting both domestic and international filmmakers.
The Uttarakhand Film Policy 2024 offers significant incentives, including financial grants and subsidies for filmmakers shooting in the state. The policy provides up to Rs 2 crore for regional films and up to Rs 3 crore for Hindi and other language films recognized in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Additionally, it offers a no-fee shooting policy for most state departments, excluding protected forest areas, and promotes new shooting locations that highlight lesser-known but picturesque parts of the state.
The policy aims to create job opportunities and strengthen local tourism by utilizing the state’s natural beauty as a backdrop for films. Film industry insiders, including renowned figures such as actor Anupam Kher and lyricist Prasoon Joshi, have also met with CM Dhami to discuss ways to further enhance the state’s film industry.
The state’s focus on becoming a film-friendly destination has already begun to show results, with a rise in film and web series shootings, contributing to the local economy and giving filmmakers easy access to resources. The Uttarakhand government is committed to improving its infrastructure to accommodate this growing demand, making it a key player in the Indian film industry’s future.
This policy has been widely welcomed, positioning Uttarakhand as an emerging hub for filmmaking in India.
