A devastating accident shook Chennai late on June 23 when a 23-year-old pregnant woman was killed in  a car accident along with her father. What was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into an irreversible tragedy. N Deepika, who was seven months pregnant, and her 60-year-old father, M Padmanabhan, were returning home after her baby shower function when their car was hit by a speeding vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road.

The pregnant woman was killed in a car accident took place on the Tambaram-Maduravoyal Chennai bypass road, near Anakaputhur, around midnight. Deepika’s mother P Indrani and the cab driver, Bhuvaneshwaran, were also in the vehicle and sustained injuries. Both survivors are currently being treated at the Chromepet Government Hospital.

Police investigations have confirmed that the accused, 26-year-old Manikandan, was driving under the influence of alcohol. Employed as a driver at an IT firm in Ambattur, Manikandan was reportedly speeding and came from the wrong side of the road when he rammed into the victims’ car. His car’s airbags deployed, and he survived with only minor injuries. He is now in police custody, and further action is underway.

Padmanabhan and his wife Indrani had travelled from Madurai to Chennai to host a baby shower for their daughter and to take her back home for her delivery. The family was heading to their residence in Santhosapuram, near Medavakkam, after the celebration in Ambattur.

The sudden impact on the left side of the car left Padmanabhan and Deepika critically injured. They were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival. The loss has left the family and local community in shock.
