The Press Association and the Editors Guild of India have strongly condemned the murder of freelance journalist Mukesh Chandrakar in Chhattisgarh. Chandrakar, known for his investigative reporting on alleged irregularities in road construction, was found dead in a septic tank on a local contractor’s property in Bijapur city.
The Editors Guild described the incident as a “matter of grave concern” and called for a swift and thorough investigation. They emphasized the importance of protecting journalists, especially those working in rural and conflict-prone areas.
In response to the murder, the Chhattisgarh Police have detained three individuals for questioning. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case.
Chandrakar, 33, was a well-known TV journalist played a key role in securing the release of CRPF personnel abducted by Maoists in Bijapur in 2021.
