NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with a delegation of Kerala MPs, has called for urgent financial assistance from the central government for the landslide-affected residents of Wayanad. The disaster, which occurred on July 30, left 231 people dead and caused widespread destruction across several villages, including Punchirimattam, Chooralmala, and Mundakkai. Homes, schools, and businesses were obliterated, leaving families without basic support systems.
During a protest staged at the Parliament premises, the MPs held banners demanding “Justice for Wayanad” and emphasized the necessity of a dedicated relief package. Priyanka Gandhi criticized the delay in assistance, highlighting that the Centre’s inaction during such a humanitarian crisis reflects poorly on the government’s priorities. She stated, “Entire villages have been washed away, and families are struggling to survive.”
The delegation recently met Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured them that details of relief measures would be announced soon. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier visit to the affected areas, significant aid has yet to materialize. Gandhi reiterated that disaster relief should transcend political differences, urging swift action to rebuild the devastated region.
This pressing issue continues to resonate as the victims await the government’s response to their plight.
