Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘Palestine’ Bag in Parliament Sparks BJP Criticism

The ongoing exchange reflects the deepening polarization around the Gaza conflict and the broader geopolitical stances of Indian political leaders.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has stirred controversy by carrying a bag emblazoned with the word “Palestine” during the Winter Session of Parliament on Monday. The bag, adorned with Palestinian emblems including a watermelon, a symbol of solidarity, has become a focal point of political debate.

This gesture comes as Vadra has been vocal in her criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, expressing support for the Palestinian people amid ongoing conflict. In a social media post, Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohammed highlighted the significance of the bag, calling it a symbol of Vadra’s compassion and commitment to justice, particularly in light of the Geneva Convention on human rights.

Vadra’s stance on Palestine is not new. She has consistently condemned Israel’s actions, referring to them as “genocidal” in nature. In June, she criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of “barbarism” and calling for global condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Her remarks followed a speech by Netanyahu in the US, where he defended Israel’s war efforts.

In response, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra criticized Vadra’s show of support for Palestine, accusing the Gandhi family of promoting “appeasement” over patriotism. Patra claimed that members of the Gandhi family, from Jawaharlal Nehru to Priyanka Vadra, have never prioritized national pride, instead focusing on gestures that he believes undermine Indian values.
