Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar assures a comprehensive probe into the Pune bus rape case, emphasizing swift justice and enhanced public safety measures.

Breaking News

In a deeply distressing incident on February 25, 2025, a 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a stationary Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus at Pune’s bustling Swargate bus stand. The accused, identified as 36-year-old Dattatray Ramdas Gade, a known history-sheeter, was apprehended after an extensive manhunt.

The victim, employed as a counselor at a hospital, was waiting for transportation to return home to Phaltan early Tuesday morning. Gade allegedly approached her under the pretense of guiding her to the correct bus, leading her to a parked MSRTC Shivshahi bus. Inside, he reportedly assaulted her twice.

Swift Apprehension of the Accused

Following the incident, Gade went into hiding, prompting law enforcement to launch a massive search operation. He was eventually located in a sugarcane field, where he attempted suicide before being captured with the aid of drone technology.

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s Response

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed deep anguish over the incident, labeling it as “painful, infuriating, and shameful.” He emphasized the necessity for a meticulous investigation to ensure justice for the victim. Pawar stated, “Efforts are being made to get the case investigated properly. Let the facts come out after a detailed investigation.”

Public Outcry and Protests

The heinous crime has sparked widespread outrage across Pune. Members of the Shiv Sena (UBT) staged protests near the Swargate bus stand, demanding swift justice and enhanced safety measures for women. The incident has reignited debates about women’s safety in public spaces, especially in areas presumed secure due to their proximity to law enforcement establishments.

Call for Enhanced Security Measures

In light of the incident, female commuters have urged the resumption of dedicated patrolling teams at the Swargate bus stand. Previously, in July 2023, the Swargate Police had launched a specialized patrolling unit to monitor auto-rickshaw and cab drivers operating in the area, significantly enhancing commuter safety. Commuters are now advocating for the reinstatement of such measures to prevent future occurrences.

Legal Proceedings and Government Assurance

The accused, Gade, has been remanded to police custody until March 12, 2025, as investigations proceed. Deputy CM Pawar has assured the public that the government is committed to ensuring justice. He also warned against vandalism and urged citizens to maintain peace while the investigation unfolds.

Conclusion

The Pune bus rape case has spotlighted critical issues concerning public safety and the efficacy of security measures in urban areas. The swift action by law enforcement and the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation reflect a collective resolve to address such grievous crimes. As the legal process advances, the public remains vigilant, advocating for justice and the implementation of robust safety protocols to protect all citizens.
