The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have announced Rajat Patidar as their new captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, following Faf du Plessis’s move to the Delhi Capitals. This decision comes amid widespread speculation that former captain Virat Kohli might reassume the leadership role. However, the franchise has opted for a fresh perspective to guide the team forward.
Patidar’s journey with RCB has been remarkable. Initially going unsold in the 2022 auction, he joined the team as a replacement player midway through the season. Over the years, his consistent performances solidified his position, leading to his retention for ₹11 crore ahead of the 2025 season. His leadership capabilities were further highlighted when he captained Madhya Pradesh to the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, showcasing his potential as a leader.
RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, acknowledged that while Kohli was a potential candidate for the captaincy, the decision to appoint Patidar was strategic. Bobat emphasized that Kohli’s leadership qualities are inherent and not confined to a title. He stated, “Virat doesn’t need a captaincy title to lead. His leadership is one of his strongest instincts and comes naturally to him.”
Head Coach Andy Flower expressed confidence in Patidar’s leadership qualities, highlighting his calm demeanor and strategic acumen. Flower remarked, “Rajat’s personality clinched it for him above other leadership contenders. His qualities will be really important through the inevitable ups and downs that come along with playing in the IPL.”
The decision to appoint Patidar reflects RCB’s forward-looking approach, aiming to build a leadership core that can serve the team for the long term. At 31, Patidar represents a younger leadership profile, aligning with the franchise’s vision for sustained success.
Virat Kohli, who led RCB from 2013 to 2021, continues to be a central figure in the team. His experience and leadership will remain invaluable assets. Bobat noted, “Even last year with Faf as captain, we saw every bit of Virat’s leadership. He leads by example with the bat, sets the tone in the field, and his professionalism is an example for all.”
The appointment of Patidar has elicited mixed reactions from fans. While some are excited about the fresh leadership, others express disappointment over Kohli not returning as captain. A fan commented, “Heartbreaking decision,” reflecting the sentiments of those who hoped for Kohli’s reinstatement.
As the IPL 2025 season approaches, RCB aims to clinch their maiden title under Patidar’s leadership. The franchise’s decision underscores a commitment to nurturing new leadership and building a team capable of achieving long-term success.
