MUMBAI: The Government of India has officially appointed Sanjay Malhotra as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet confirmed the selection, granting him a three-year term starting December 11, 2024. Malhotra succeeds Shaktikanta Das, who led the RBI for nearly six years and is the second-longest-serving governor in India’s history.
An IAS officer from the 1990 Rajasthan cadre, Malhotra brings a wealth of experience to the role. He holds an engineering degree in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur and a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA. Over his 33-year career, Malhotra has made significant contributions in sectors such as finance, taxation, power, and information technology.
Currently, Malhotra serves as the Secretary for Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, where he has been instrumental in tax policy formulation for both direct and indirect taxes. He has previously held key positions, including Secretary in the Department of Financial Services. His extensive expertise in public administration and economic policy is expected to drive RBI’s mission to stabilize India’s financial system amidst global and domestic challenges.
