Amid internal Congress tensions, Shashi Tharoor shares a selfie with Union Minister Piyush Goyal and UK's Jonathan Reynolds, highlighting revived India-UK Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

Breaking News

Amidst ongoing speculation about internal disagreements within the Congress party, Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor recently shared a photograph on social media featuring himself alongside Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds. This meeting coincides with the revival of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK, signaling a potential thaw in previously stalled discussions.

Tharoor’s post on X (formerly Twitter) read: “Good to exchange words with Jonathan Reynolds, Britain’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, in the company of his Indian counterpart, Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The long-stalled FTA negotiations have been revived, which is most welcome.” This statement underscores the significance of the renewed trade talks, especially in the context of global economic uncertainties and the strategic importance of Indo-UK relations.

The backdrop to this development includes recent reports of Tharoor expressing dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership. In an interview, he hinted at exploring alternative avenues if his contributions were not valued within the party. He stated, “If the party wants to use that, I will be there for the party. If not, I have my own things to do.” This sentiment was further amplified by a cryptic post on X, where he quoted, “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.” Such remarks have fueled discussions about a potential rift between Tharoor and the Congress hierarchy.

The timing of Tharoor’s meeting with Goyal and Reynolds is particularly noteworthy. India and the UK have recently decided to expedite negotiations on a proposed trade agreement, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. This decision comes after a hiatus in discussions, attributed to general elections in both countries. The renewed focus on the FTA is seen as a strategic move to bolster bilateral trade, which stood at £41 billion up to September 2024. UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the priority of securing a deal, stating, “Securing a deal is a top priority for our government.”

Tharoor’s engagement in these high-level discussions highlights his active role in shaping India’s foreign trade policies, transcending party lines to focus on national interests. However, his recent commendation of the Kerala Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s industrial policies has drawn criticism from within his party. Some Congress leaders perceive his praise as a deviation from party positions, leading to internal debates about his allegiance and intentions. In response to the backlash, Tharoor clarified that his comments were specific to the state’s startup ecosystem and not an endorsement of the entire economic framework. He emphasized that the foundation for these initiatives was laid by the previous Congress-led government, and the current administration has built upon it.

The juxtaposition of Tharoor’s bipartisan engagements and internal party criticisms paints a complex picture of his political journey. While he remains a prominent figure in national politics, his recent actions suggest a willingness to collaborate across party lines for the nation’s benefit. As India navigates its position on the global stage, leaders like Tharoor play a crucial role in bridging domestic politics with international diplomacy.
