Renowned Tamil actor, martial artist, and archery expert Shihan Hussaini passed away on March 25, 2025, in Chennai after battling blood cancer. The 65-year-old had publicly revealed his illness earlier in the month, expressing his determination to fight despite his deteriorating condition. Known for his notable roles in Tamil cinema and his immense contribution to martial arts, Shihan Hussaini left behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.

Early Life and Passion for Martial Arts

Born in Madurai, Shihan Hussaini discovered his passion for martial arts at a young age. He dedicated his life to mastering karate and later established a martial arts school, where he trained hundreds of students in self-defense and combat techniques. His expertise earned him respect within the martial arts community, and he eventually became a revered mentor to many aspiring fighters.

Apart from karate, he also developed a deep interest in archery. He promoted the sport across Tamil Nadu and trained several young archers, instilling discipline and perseverance in his students. His efforts in sports education made him a well-known figure beyond the entertainment industry.

While Shihan Hussaini was a celebrated martial artist, he also had a successful acting career. His journey in Tamil cinema began with the legendary director K. Balachander’s classic film Punnagai Mannan (1986), where he played a negative role, portraying a dancer who mistreats the female lead, played by Revathi.

Following his debut, he acted in Velaikaran (1987) alongside superstar Rajinikanth. He also made an appearance in the Hollywood action film Bloodstone (1988). Over the years, he continued to impress audiences with his versatility, taking on various roles in Tamil films.

One of his most recognized performances came in Badri (2001), starring Vijay, where he played a fitness trainer. His final big-screen appearance was in Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal (2022), a romantic comedy featuring Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, and Samantha.

A Mentor to Many, Including Vijay and Pawan Kalyan

Apart from being an actor and martial artist, Shihan Hussaini played a crucial role in shaping the careers of several celebrities. He was the martial arts trainer for actors Pawan Kalyan and Vijay during their early years.

Interestingly, when Pawan Kalyan joined his karate training classes in the 1990s, Shihan Hussaini was unaware that he was the younger brother of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi. Pawan Kalyan trained under him for months before the revelation. Similarly, Hussaini also trained Tamil superstar Vijay, particularly during the making of Badri.

His teachings and guidance in martial arts were highly respected, and he was instrumental in popularizing karate and archery among youngsters in South India.

Battle with Blood Cancer and Final Days

In early March 2025, Shihan Hussaini shocked his fans by revealing that he had been diagnosed with blood cancer and aplastic anemia. Despite his deteriorating health, he remained positive and continued to interact with his followers.

During his final days, he expressed his wish for his students to carry forward his passion for martial arts and archery. In a heartfelt message, he urged actors Vijay and Pawan Kalyan to support his archery school and ensure that young talents in India get the necessary training and opportunities.

Recognizing his contributions, the Tamil Nadu government extended financial aid of ₹5 lakh to assist with his medical expenses. However, his condition worsened, and he ultimately succumbed to the disease.

Last Rites and Emotional Farewell

On March 25, 2025, Shihan Hussaini’s family shared the news of his demise on Facebook. His mortal remains were kept at his residence in Besant Nagar, Chennai, where close friends, students, and well-wishers gathered to pay their final respects.

In a moving tribute, his students honored him in the way he wished—by performing martial arts and archery demonstrations. At 3 PM, karate practitioners dressed in Gi uniforms performed katas (karate forms), symbolizing his spirit and teachings. Later, at 5 PM, archers gathered to shoot arrows in his honor.

Following the tribute, his body was transported to Madurai for the final rites. In a selfless act, Shihan Hussaini had donated his body for medical research, ensuring that even in death, he would continue to contribute to learning and progress.
