Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Visits Jammu; Assesses Strong Crop Damage and Announces Relief Measures: Sept 2025

New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the flood-affected border village of Badyal Brahmana in RS Pura, Jammu, on September 19, 2025. The Minister personally inspected the fields to assess the damage caused by recent floods and addressed a large gathering of affected farmers and residents, assuring them of the Central Government’s full support during this difficult time.

On-the-Ground Assessment and Government Support

Shri Chouhan expressed solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and reiterated the Central Government’s commitment to stand by the victims of this calamity. He explained that teams from various ministries, including Home Affairs, Jal Shakti, Rural Development, and Agriculture, had conducted surveys in the affected areas and would soon submit detailed damage assessments to facilitate timely relief. He emphasized that once the state government’s memoranda are received, the Central Government would leave no stone unturned in providing extensive assistance.



Relief Measures Announced for Farmers and Villagers

Following his visit, Shri Chouhan chaired a review meeting with Jammu and Kashmir government officials in Jammu city. He announced immediate release of one installment under the PM-Kisan scheme specifically for farmers impacted by the floods. Additionally, workers in the affected areas will receive 50 extra man-days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), increasing their entitlement from 100 to 150 days in recognition of the disaster’s impact.

Compensation for domestic animals lost in flooding will also be provided, and the Minister announced plans to rebuild approximately 5,000 damaged houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with allocated assistance of ₹1.30 lakh per house including provisions for separate toilets. Recognizing the efforts and losses of Self Help Groups (SHGs) during floods, the government will release ₹76 crore as support to these groups.

Innovative Solutions and Ongoing Commitments

Shri Chouhan advocated for the effective use of sand deposits left on agricultural land by floods, encouraging farmers to utilize the material on their lands with relaxed rules from the Jammu and Kashmir Mining Department. He also noted that a fund of ₹2,499 crore was already available with the state for disaster management and assured that the Central Government would provide additional aid if required. Plans to renovate damaged canals and embankments will receive central assistance to restore infrastructure swiftly.
