New Delhi: In a key interaction reflecting the Centre’s commitment to cooperative federalism, the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, met the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in New Delhi today. The meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence, focused on a broad range of strategic and developmental issues concerning the state of Sikkim.
Strengthening the Development Agenda for Sikkim
Governor Mathur apprised the Prime Minister of the current socio-economic landscape of Sikkim and the status of various centrally-sponsored schemes being implemented across the state. The Governor briefed Shri Modi on the progress in sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, sustainable agriculture, health, education, and digital connectivity.
The discussions also covered the state’s efforts in promoting organic farming—a model that has brought global recognition to Sikkim—as well as the need for further central support to build on this success and expand export avenues for organic produce.
Focus on Border Security and Infrastructure
Given Sikkim’s strategic location along India’s northern borders, matters related to national security and the strengthening of border infrastructure were also deliberated. The Governor emphasized the importance of developing robust road and telecom connectivity in the border regions to improve accessibility, facilitate quicker movement of goods and services, and support defense logistics.
The Prime Minister is believed to have assured continued support for infrastructure enhancement projects under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the Border Area Development Programme (BADP).
Promoting Tourism, Youth Engagement, and Cultural Preservation
Governor Mathur also highlighted Sikkim’s immense tourism potential—ranging from eco-tourism and spiritual tourism to adventure travel. He requested greater synergy between central tourism promotion efforts and state initiatives to attract both domestic and international tourists.
The Prime Minister appreciated the state’s efforts in youth engagement and skill development and reiterated the Centre’s intention to expand opportunities for young citizens, particularly in the Northeast.
In line with India’s broader vision of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,’ the Governor and Prime Minister also discussed initiatives to preserve and promote Sikkim’s rich cultural, linguistic, and tribal heritage.
Official Confirmation
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the meeting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with a post that read:
“Governor of Sikkim, Shri @OmMathur_Raj, met Prime Minister @narendramodi.”
Significance of the Meeting
This high-level meeting underscores the importance the Central Government places on strengthening state-centre coordination, particularly with strategically significant and ecologically sensitive border states like Sikkim. It also reflects the government’s vision of inclusive development, where regional priorities are integrated into national policy frameworks.
Governor Mathur’s interaction with the Prime Minister is expected to accelerate ongoing and upcoming projects in the state and further deepen the collaboration between the Government of India and the Government of Sikkim for the overall welfare of its people.
