MUMBAI: As the music world commemorates the 100th birth anniversary of legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi, acclaimed vocalist Sonu Nigam is set to honor his musical idol with a special concert titled “Sau Saal Pehle.” Scheduled for December 24, 2024, at Mumbai’s Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), this event marks Nigam’s first dedicated Rafi tribute concert in India.
Nigam, who regards Rafi as his “musical father,” has often expressed deep admiration for the late singer’s versatility and emotive expression. “Rafi sahab was the prime reference point. He could sing a qawwali, a bhajan, a sad song, a high-pitch song, a semi-classical. So that’s what a singer should be like. He was my inspiration,” Nigam remarked.
The “Sau Saal Pehle” concert promises a comprehensive journey through Rafi’s extensive repertoire, featuring over 50 of his iconic songs performed live by Nigam, accompanied by a 50-member orchestra. The three-hour event aims to capture the essence of Rafi’s music, from romantic melodies to energetic tracks, showcasing the timeless appeal of his work.
Adding a personal touch, Nigam’s father, veteran singer Agam Kumar Nigam, will join him on stage. Reflecting on this collaboration, Nigam shared, “My father introduced me to Rafi sahab’s music. As a kid, I had performed with papa at so many shows, singing Rafi sahab’s classics. So, it feels surreal that we would both take the stage for such a sacred occasion.”
The concert has garnered significant attention, with Rafi’s family, including his son Shahid Rafi and daughter-in-law Firdaus Rafi, closely associated with the event’s organization. They, along with other celebrities, are expected to attend, underscoring the enduring legacy of Mohammed Rafi in the Indian music industry.
Nigam’s tribute not only celebrates Rafi’s centenary but also reflects the profound influence Rafi has had on subsequent generations of singers. “He has helped me be what I’m today and I still keep learning from him. He is my musical father,” Nigam affirmed.
As fans eagerly anticipate this homage, “Sau Saal Pehle” is poised to be a memorable celebration of Mohammed Rafi’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music.
