Netflix’s global hit Squid Game has made history once again with the release of its highly anticipated second season. Dropped this Christmas, the South Korean dystopian survival thriller has achieved a remarkable milestone: it has become the first series in Netflix history to debut at number one across all 93 countries where the platform is available.
Season 2’s success is a continuation of the record-breaking legacy of its predecessor, which became the most-watched Netflix series of all time. While exact viewership numbers for Season 2 have yet to be released, the first season garnered 265.2 million views, translating to about 2.2 billion hours of watch time, solidifying Squid Game as a global phenomenon.
However, despite its record-breaking debut, Squid Game Season 2 has faced mixed reviews. The show currently holds a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, a notable drop from the 83% audience approval of the first season.
The new season expands on the story with more characters and deeper backstories. It continues to follow Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, and introduces new faces like Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Park Gyu-young, and Choi Seung-hyun.
Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also directs and writes the series, Squid Game remains one of Netflix’s most ambitious and successful shows. Fans are already anticipating the third and final season, which is set to release in 2025.
