Stock Market Opens Lower: Nifty, Sensex Dip as IT and Pharma Stocks Decline

The Indian stock market opened in the red on Friday, January 3, 2025, following a strong performance in the previous session. At 9:30 AM IST, the benchmark BSE Sensex was down by 248.13 points, or 0.31%, settling at 79,695.58. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty fell by 57.45 points, or 0.24%, to 24,131.20.

The downturn was driven by declines in key sectors, particularly IT and pharma. Among the 30 Sensex stocks, Infosys Ltd saw the steepest fall, dropping 0.95% to ₹1,939.10. ITC Ltd and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) followed closely, both slipping 0.95% to ₹484.60 and ₹4,145.05, respectively.

Sectoral performance also mirrored this trend, with the Nifty Pharma sector leading the decline, falling by 0.59% to 23,413.75. The Nifty Healthcare Index and Nifty IT sectors also experienced notable drops of 0.58% and 0.54%, respectively.
