DUBAI: In a significant move to uphold the integrity of cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Sunny Dhillon, a former assistant coach of an Abu Dhabi T10 League franchise, for six years. The ban, backdated to September 13, 2023, was announced following Dhillon’s violation of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code.

Dhillon was found guilty under several articles of the anti-corruption code, including being party to attempts to improperly influence match outcomes. He also failed to disclose approaches to engage in corrupt practices and obstructed the investigation carried out by the ICC. These breaches occurred during the 2021 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, highlighting ongoing challenges in combating corruption in cricket.

The ICC acted as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (DACO) for the ECB during the tournament. Alongside Dhillon, other individuals associated with the league were also charged with anti-corruption breaches. This incident underscores the ICC’s commitment to protecting the spirit of the game through stringent measures against corrupt practices.

The ICC’s Stand on Integrity
In a statement, the ICC reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption in cricket. “The integrity of the game is paramount, and the ICC remains committed to rooting out such practices to safeguard cricket’s future,” an official remarked.

This case serves as a stark reminder for players, officials, and other stakeholders to uphold ethical standards and cooperate fully with investigations. With such measures, cricket aims to retain its global fan base and maintain trust as a sport of fair play.
