Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, recently visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, sparking questions about why she was not permitted to touch the revered Shivling. Spiritual leader Swami Kailashanand Giri addressed the matter, clarifying the temple’s strict traditions and the cultural significance behind such protocols.

Swami Kailashanand Giri explained that it was his responsibility to uphold the customs of the temple, emphasizing the sacredness of the Shivling and Indian traditions. While Powell Jobs, known for her deep spiritual beliefs, was welcomed with respect and was given prasad and a garland, the rule preventing non-Hindus from touching the Shivling was followed as part of the temple’s long-standing customs.

“The Kashi Vishwanath Temple maintains a tradition that no one except Hindus can touch the Shivling,” the seer explained. “She respected this tradition and was allowed to view the Shivling from outside. She will also take part in the Mahakumbh rituals, including a dip in the Ganga.”

Swami Kailashanand Giri also praised Powell Jobs for her respectful approach towards Indian spirituality and culture. He shared that she considers him as both a father and a Guru, demonstrating her genuine interest in learning about Indian traditions. “Indian traditions are being embraced by people worldwide, and Laurene is one of them,” he added.

Laurene Powell Jobs, accompanied by Swami Kailashanand Giri, also participated in the Pattabhishek ceremony at the Niranjani Akhara, part of the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela celebrations. The Mahakumbh, which happens once every 12 years, is expected to attract millions of devotees, with the key bathing rituals set for January 14, 29, and February 3.
