Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi Walks Out of Assembly Over National Anthem Row

This latest incident underscores the deepening friction between Tamil Nadu's government and the Raj Bhavan, highlighting the challenges in their relationship.

Breaking News

For the second consecutive year, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi walked out of the state assembly, citing “brazen disrespect” to the Constitution and the national anthem. The walkout occurred on the first day of the winter session after a dispute over the order of playing the national and state anthems.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Raj Bhavan, the governor urged Chief Minister MK Stalin and Speaker M Appavu to play the national anthem before the Tamil state anthem, “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu.” However, his request was reportedly refused. The Raj Bhavan’s statement expressed “deep anguish” over the refusal, labeling it as a grave insult.

The Speaker defended the assembly’s convention, stating that the Tamil state anthem is traditionally played first. Despite the disagreement, the Speaker proceeded to read the governor’s prepared address after his exit.

Assembly Sloganeering Adds to Tensions
The session was further disrupted by protests from both the ruling DMK-led INDIA bloc and opposition AIADMK members. DMK legislators criticized the governor, demanding accountability for the alleged sexual assault of a student at Chennai’s Anna University, as Ravi serves as the chancellor of state universities. In response, AIADMK MLAs demanded action against other suspects in the case.

Congress MLAs, led by state president Selvaperunthagai, also staged a walkout, condemning the governor’s actions.

Ongoing Clashes Between Raj Bhavan and DMK Government
Tensions between Governor Ravi and the DMK government have persisted. In February 2024, Ravi refused to deliver the government’s inaugural address, leading the assembly to adopt its own resolution. Similarly, in January 2023, Ravi walked out after Chief Minister Stalin objected to omissions in his speech.

This latest incident underscores the deepening friction between Tamil Nadu’s government and the Raj Bhavan, highlighting the challenges in their relationship.
