Hyderabad: In a special session on Monday, the Telangana Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, on former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy introduced the motion, highlighting Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in India’s economic transformation through liberalization, privatization, and globalization policies. Reddy noted that these reforms laid the foundation for India’s global competitiveness. He also acknowledged Dr. Singh’s significant contributions to social legislation, including the Right to Information Act and the Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The Assembly also approved a proposal to install a statue of Dr. Singh in Hyderabad’s Financial District, honoring his contributions to the nation’s development and his role in the formation of Telangana state.

Leaders across party lines supported the resolution, emphasizing Dr. Singh’s enduring legacy as a visionary economist and statesman. The Assembly adjourned sine die after adopting the resolution.
