Mumbai: The brutal murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh has sparked massive protests in Latur, with thousands, including Deshmukh’s teenage daughter Vaibhavi, demanding justice for the slain leader. The incident has also intensified political pressure on the Mahayuti government, as opposition parties allege links between Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister Dhananjay Munde and Walmik Karad, a key suspect in the case.
Protest for Justice
The protest, led by the Sakal Maratha Samaj, began at Sane Guruji Vidyalaya and ended at the tehsildar’s office, where a memorandum of demands was submitted. Vaibhavi delivered an emotional speech, urging the public to stand by her family until the culprits are brought to justice. “My father was brutally murdered. I ask all of you to continue supporting us in this fight,” she said through tears.
Political and Public Outrage
The opposition, including Congress leaders and Maratha activists, has rallied behind Deshmukh’s family. A silent march is planned in Beed on Saturday, with leaders from various parties joining forces to demand swift action. Protesters have also called for the resignation of NCP minister Munde, citing Karad’s alleged involvement in the murder.
Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village, was killed on December 9 after intervening in an extortion attempt at a wind power plant. While three suspects have been arrested, four others, including Karad, remain at large. Deshmukh’s body was discovered with signs of torture, sparking outrage across the state.
Rising Violence Against Local Leaders
Adding to the unrest, a sarpanch from Dharashiv district, Namdeo Nikam, reported an attempt on his life. Nikam stated that attackers tried to set his car on fire using petrol. Dharashiv police have launched an investigation, with Superintendent Sanjay Jadhav pledging stern action.
The twin incidents have highlighted the growing threats faced by local leaders and have amplified calls for better protection and accountability. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured the public that the culprits in both cases will face strict punishment.
