TN Virudhunagar witnessed a disturbing incident on Saturday when a dog attack left at least 14 people injured, including an eight-year-old child, in the Kattaiyapuram area. According to hospital sources, the injured victims sustained level-3 dog bite injuries, which are considered serious and require immediate medical intervention. Doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Virudhunagar confirmed that all affected individuals were promptly treated. While most were discharged after receiving anti-rabies immunoglobulin and anti-rabies vaccine doses, a 74-year-old woman was admitted for further medical observation due to her age and condition.

Residents described scenes of panic as the dog moved aggressively through the streets, attacking people without provocation. Many of the victims were caught off guard while performing routine activities outside their homes.

TN Virudhunagar residents demand clarity on dog ownership and safety lapses

Confusion remains over whether the dog involved was a stray or a privately owned pet. Several residents claimed that the animal belonged to someone in the locality, while municipal officials said they were still verifying the dog’s status. This lack of clarity has added to public anger, with locals questioning accountability if the dog was indeed domesticated.Stray dog attack in Thiruvananthapuram leaves 20 injured

One of the injured residents said he realised the scale of the incident only after reaching the hospital. He found that multiple people from the same neighbourhood had been attacked within a short span of time. Another victim recounted being bitten while washing clothes outside her home, stating that there was no warning before the attack.

The situation escalated after the incident, with locals reportedly killing the dog later. While emotions were running high, the act has also drawn attention to the absence of immediate animal control intervention during the attack.

Residents have demanded that the municipality take concrete and visible steps to prevent similar incidents. Many expressed fear that without strict monitoring, such attacks could recur, putting children and elderly people at particular risk.

However, residents argue that vaccination alone is not enough. They point out that aggressive behaviour, lack of monitoring, and delayed response during emergencies remain unresolved issues. The incident has highlighted the need for better coordination between animal welfare measures and public safety planning.

Health experts underline that level-3 dog bite injuries are serious because they involve deep wounds and carry a high risk of rabies transmission if not treated immediately. While timely medical response helped prevent worse outcomes in this case, doctors stress that prevention is always better than emergency care. Local activists have also called for clearer rules regarding pet ownership, including registration, vaccination records, and responsibility for animals that pose a threat in public spaces. Without enforcement, they argue, such incidents will continue to occur.
