Police reports indicate that the truck was overloaded with gravel and was speeding when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. The impact was catastrophic, crushing the front of the bus beyond recognition. Both drivers, Akash Kamle from Maharashtra and Dastagiri Baba, a senior RTC driver, died on the spot.
Truck Rams and Overturns Bus, Leaving Passengers Trapped
Eyewitnesses described the scene as nightmarish. More than 50 tonnes of gravel, double the permitted load, spilled onto the road and the bus, trapping several passengers under its heavy weight. Villagers and motorists rushed to rescue survivors before police and emergency teams arrived.
Chevella Police reached the accident site shortly after 7 a.m. and began a rescue operation using JCB machines to clear the debris. During the rescue, Chevella Circle Inspector Sridhar was injured when a machine accidentally ran over his foot. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Rescue workers revealed heartbreaking sights families trapped together, including three sisters studying in Hyderabad, a newly married couple, and their infant child. One rescue worker said the most painful moment was discovering a mother holding her baby tightly under the gravel, both lifeless.
The injured were shifted to Vikarabad Government Hospital and PMR Hospital in Chevella. Several remain in critical condition, and doctors are working continuously to stabilize them.
Truck Rams Tragedy Prompts Swift Government Action
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow and directed officials to provide immediate relief and medical support. A control room was set up at the Secretariat to coordinate information for families of victims.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and TGSRTC Vice-Chairman Nagi Reddy visited the site, supervised the rescue, and met the families. The minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹7 lakh for each deceased (₹5 lakh from the state and ₹2 lakh from TGSRTC) and ₹2 lakh for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced ₹2 lakh compensation for each victim’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured under the PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Officials have ordered magisterial and departmental inquiries to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the lorry was overspeeding and carrying an excessive load, which caused it to lose balance and overturn. Police have registered a case under Section 106(1) of the BNS for causing death by rash and negligent driving.

Locals claim that the Mirzaguda stretch of the highway is notorious for accidents due to poor maintenance and reckless driving by heavy vehicles. Residents demanded better road safety measures, installation of speed cameras, and strict weight checks for lorries transporting gravel and construction materials.
