The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka. Detected through routine surveillance, these cases involve a three-month-old female and an eight-month-old male, both with bronchopneumonia histories. The female infant has been discharged, while the male infant is currently recovering. Notably, neither has a history of international travel.
HMPV is a respiratory virus causing symptoms ranging from mild cold-like signs—such as cough, runny nose, sore throat, and fever—to severe respiratory issues like wheezing, difficulty breathing, and pneumonia. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to severe illness.
The Health Ministry emphasizes that HMPV circulates globally, including in India, with no significant rise in influenza-like or severe acute respiratory illnesses reported. The ministry continues to monitor the situation through surveillance channels, with ICMR tracking HMPV trends year-round.
Recent reports indicate a surge in HMPV cases in China, leading to overwhelmed hospitals, particularly children’s facilities in Hunan province. While Chinese authorities suggest the increase aligns with seasonal flu trends, concerns persist due to the virus’s impact on vulnerable populations.
In light of these developments, the Health Ministry reassures that India is prepared to manage any potential increase in respiratory illnesses, with public health interventions ready if necessary. A recent nationwide preparedness drill demonstrated the country’s readiness to address such health challenges.
