New Jersey: An Uber Eats driver in New Jersey was left stunned after discovering that what was supposed to be a standard food delivery turned out to be 20 grams of marijuana disguised as a burrito. The incident, which took place in Lindenwold, Camden County, is now under investigation by Washington Township Police.
On a routine delivery Friday night, the driver was expecting a burrito, soup, and water, but a strange odor from the package raised her suspicions as she headed towards Glassboro. Believing the smell resembled marijuana, she pulled over and immediately contacted the authorities. “She thought it smelled like marijuana,” said Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik.
Upon inspecting the package, officers found the burrito-shaped wrapping to be a clever disguise, with no food inside—just a tin-foil-wrapped bundle containing a zip-lock bag of raw marijuana. “There was no meat, lettuce, beans, or rice. It was actually an ounce of marijuana,” Gurcsik added.
Images released by the police show the crude attempt to pass off the drugs as a meal. Investigators suspect that the Uber Eats delivery service, which prohibits the transport of illegal items, was exploited in this case. An Uber spokesperson called the situation “deeply disturbing” and commended the driver for acting swiftly by contacting law enforcement. They also encouraged other drivers to report any suspicious deliveries.
The discovery has raised concerns about the increasing misuse of delivery services for illicit purposes. Earlier this year, an Uber driver in another case reported being asked to deliver fraudulent gift cards, suggesting a growing trend of criminal activity linked to the platform.
Although no charges have been filed yet, authorities are urging both delivery drivers and customers to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity to help prevent the abuse of these services. The drugs have been secured as evidence, and the investigation continues.
