Union Health Ministry Cracks Down on Spurious Drugs in Kolkata

Major Seizure of Counterfeit Medications

Breaking News

KOLKATA: In a decisive move against counterfeit pharmaceuticals, the Union Health Ministry has seized spurious anti-cancer and anti-diabetic drugs valued at approximately ₹6.60 crore in Kolkata. The operation was a collaborative effort between the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), East Zone, and the Drugs Control Directorate, West Bengal.

The raid targeted M/s Care and Cure For You, a wholesale establishment in the city. The seized medications were labeled as originating from countries including Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh. However, they lacked the necessary documentation to confirm their legitimate importation into India, rendering them spurious. Investigators also discovered empty packaging materials, further raising concerns about the authenticity of the products.

The proprietor of the wholesale firm, a woman, has been arrested and is currently in judicial custody for 14 days. Samples of the seized drugs have been sent for quality testing, and the remaining stock is secured by the CDSCO. This action underscores the government’s commitment to eliminating counterfeit and substandard drugs from the market.
