Amritsar: A US plane carrying 119 Indian deportees is set to land at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar on February 15. This marks the second batch of Indian nationals deported by the US government under its ongoing immigration enforcement measures.
The flight is scheduled to arrive at approximately 10 PM on Thursday. The deportees, classified as illegal immigrants, include individuals from various states across India. According to official sources, 67 are from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, eight from Gujarat, three from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Goa, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, and one each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
The US government has intensified its efforts to curb illegal immigration since the Biden administration took office, continuing policies that were initially enforced under the Trump administration. This deportation is part of a broader strategy to address undocumented immigration, which has been a contentious issue in US politics.
Impact on Families and Communities
The return of these individuals has sparked mixed reactions in their home states. While families are relieved to reunite with their loved ones, concerns about their reintegration into society and employment opportunities remain. Many of the deportees had migrated to the US in search of better economic prospects, and their return poses challenges for local authorities and communities.
Government Response
The Indian government has been coordinating with US authorities to ensure the smooth repatriation of its citizens. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) are working closely with state governments to provide necessary support, including counseling and rehabilitation programs, to help the deportees rebuild their lives.
