Veteran South Korean Actress Lee Joo Shil Passes Away After Cancer Battle

Lee Joo Shil, a beloved veteran South Korean actress known for her roles in Squid Game Season 2 and several iconic films and dramas, passed away at the age of 80 on February 2, 2025. Her agency, 1230culture, confirmed her death earlier today, stating that the actress had been battling stomach cancer for the past few months.

Lee’s health had declined significantly in the last few months, following a diagnosis of stomach cancer. Prior to this, she had bravely fought and won a battle with stage 3 breast cancer back in 1993, enduring years of treatment and ultimately overcoming the disease. Despite the challenges, Lee continued to act, and her passion for the craft remained evident until her final days.

Her remarkable career spanned over six decades. Lee Joo Shil began her journey in the performing arts as a stage actress in 1965. She quickly gained recognition, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, and went on to feature in several critically acclaimed plays like Death of a Salesman and Macbeth. Her versatility extended to both film and television, making her a prominent figure in South Korea’s entertainment industry.

Lee’s film credits include notable titles such as Country Diaries and Train to Busan, while her television career saw her feature in a variety of beloved dramas. She appeared in Beauty and Mr. Romantic alongside Im Soo Hyang and Ji Hyun Woo, Tell Me That You Love Me with Shin Hyun Been and Jung Woo Sung, and A Time Called You with Ahn Hyo Seop and Jeon Yeo Been. Lee’s other well-known TV appearances included roles in Divorce Attorney Shin, Happiness, Juvenile Justice, The Good Bad Mother, and The Uncanny Counter.

For her final role, Lee portrayed the character of Wi Ha Joon’s mother in Squid Game Season 2, marking her last contribution to the world of entertainment.
