BEED: Residents of Massajog village in Maharashtra’s Beed district have staged a ‘jal samadhi’ protest, standing waist-deep in a local lake, demanding justice in the murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
Deshmukh was abducted and killed on December 9, allegedly for opposing an extortion attempt targeting a windmill company in the area. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) is investigating the case and has arrested three individuals, including Walmik Karad, an associate of NCP leader Dhananjay Munde. Karad surrendered in Pune and has been remanded in 14-day police custody.
Despite these arrests, three suspects remain at large, sparking public outrage. Vaibhavi Deshmukh, the sarpanch’s daughter, has expressed frustration over delays and urged authorities to expedite the investigation and apprehend all involved.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured strict action, stating, “No one has the right to take the law into their hands. Justice will prevail.”
The villagers’ protest underscores the community’s demand for swift justice and highlights growing concerns about the safety of local leaders who stand against criminal activities. The CID continues its investigation, focusing on locating and apprehending the remaining suspects.
