Virat Kohli, one of the greatest captains in India’s cricketing history, is set to make his first domestic appearance since 2012 in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. The former India captain will feature in Delhi’s final group match against Railways, starting Wednesday, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Despite his leadership credentials, Kohli has declined the offer to captain the team for this game.
Captaincy Decision
Upon his return to the domestic fold, Delhi offered Kohli the captaincy for the match. However, both Kohli and Rishabh Pant chose to decline the role, opting for Ayush Badoni to continue leading the side. Kohli, who last captained Delhi in the Challenger Trophy in 2013, stated his decision to focus on his personal performance and the team’s success without any added responsibility.
Training Ahead of the Game
Kohli arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday after completing his training in Alibaug under the guidance of former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar. The 36-year-old cricketer joined his Delhi teammates at 9 am and engaged in a series of warm-up exercises before playing a quick game of football for 15 minutes, bonding with his team. The practice session was closely monitored by Sarandeep Singh, Delhi’s head coach.
Pant’s Absence
Rishabh Pant, who returned to domestic cricket after his injury layoff, made a disappointing appearance against Saurashtra. The DDCA confirmed that Pant would not play in the Railways match, as he has been advised to rest ahead of the Champions Trophy, allowing him to prepare for the upcoming white-ball season.
Focus on Team Play
Despite recent struggles in international cricket, particularly during the New Zealand series and Australia tour, Kohli appeared relaxed and focused during the training session. His decision to step back from captaincy highlights his commitment to the team and individual performance, ensuring that the focus remains on collective success rather than personal accolades.
