Piyush Goyal Urges Indian Industry to Enhance Quality Standards and Drive Innovation

NEW DELHI: In a recent address at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) 97th Annual General Meeting, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the importance of raising quality standards across Indian industries. Goyal urged businesses to tap into their technical committees and appoint representatives to ensure robust quality checks and standards, emphasizing that this effort will establish India as a trusted global partner and provider of quality goods, paving the way for a “Viksit Bharat.”

The Minister also called on industry leaders to collaborate with the government to reduce compliance burdens and decriminalize laws that hinder business growth. This, he explained, will improve India’s ease of doing business, creating a more conducive environment for industrial growth and investment. Additionally, he stressed the need to utilize the Rs 1 lakh crore allocated to the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to foster innovation and establish a research-driven ecosystem in India.

Amardeep Singh Bhatia, DPIIT Secretary, also spoke at the event, announcing plans to establish more industrial parks in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, with a framework for this expected by the end of the year. The government has already invested in 11 industrial corridors, which include the development of 20 smart industrial townships and several sector-specific parks. Furthermore, the PLI scheme, which has attracted investments worth Rs 1.46 lakh crore, has contributed significantly to technological advancements and is expected to further bolster India’s manufacturing sector.

Bhatia also highlighted the success of India’s relaxed FDI policy and the government’s focus on encouraging deep-tech startups, with over 1.53 lakh startups now registered under the Startup India initiative.

As India aims to become a manufacturing powerhouse, the call for improved quality standards, technological collaboration, and innovation-driven growth remains critical to achieving long-term industrial success.

MVA Alliance in Crisis: Raut and Patole Clash Over Leadership in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Tensions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance have escalated after Congress leader Nana Patole’s assertion that the Congress would lead the next Maharashtra government. His claim sparked a sharp response from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, who quickly rejected Patole’s statement. Raut said, “No one will accept this,” stressing that leadership within the alliance should be determined by the Congress high command rather than individual leaders. He firmly stated that such claims without party consensus could disrupt the unity of the coalition.

Raut’s comments reflect deepening divisions within the alliance, particularly regarding leadership roles and seat-sharing arrangements in the run-up to the November 23 elections. Patole, however, defended his position, clarifying that decisions within the Congress are made by the party’s central leadership in Delhi, signaling a direct challenge to Shiv Sena’s stance. With the elections looming, the rift between these key leaders raises questions about the future of MVA’s collaboration and its impact on the state’s political landscape.

Writers Slam JCB Literature Prize for Alleged “Hypocrisy” Amid Demolition Controversy

NEW DELHI: Over 100 writers, translators, and publishers have accused the JCB Prize for Literature of hypocrisy, highlighting its association with JCB, a UK-based manufacturer of bulldozers allegedly used in controversial demolitions in India and Palestine. The writers, in an open letter, criticized the funding of the literary prize by a company linked to the destruction of homes and livelihoods, terming it incompatible with the values of literature.

The letter, released ahead of the JCB Prize winner announcement on November 23, 2024, called attention to the BJP-led government’s alleged use of JCB bulldozers in “bulldozer justice” campaigns targeting Muslim communities in India. These campaigns, reportedly involving the demolition of homes, shops, and places of worship, have drawn significant criticism from human rights organizations globally.

While the prize celebrates literary excellence and promotes Indian writing, its association with JCB raises questions about the ethics of corporate sponsorships in cultural platforms. This year’s shortlist features a mix of debut novels and translations from regional Indian languages, showcasing India’s literary diversity.
