LOP Rahul Gandhi Urges Swift Action in Adani Controversy Amidst Allegations of Fraud

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified his criticism of industrialist Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for immediate action in light of fresh allegations against the Adani Group. Addressing the media, Gandhi demanded the billionaire’s arrest and a comprehensive investigation led by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) following reports of bribery and financial misconduct.

The allegations stem from a U.S. prosecution that accuses Adani of orchestrating a $250 million bribery scheme involving Indian officials. Gandhi alleged that this case not only violates Indian laws but also compromises India’s international reputation, citing extensive reporting by global investigative networks such as the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

In his statement, Gandhi criticized SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) for its alleged failure to act impartially. He called for the removal of SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and an inquiry into her decision-making, especially considering recent reports suggesting lapses in regulatory oversight of Adani-linked entities operating in offshore tax havens.

The Congress leader reiterated his long-standing demands for transparency, asserting that the government has shielded Adani from accountability. He questioned SEBI’s reluctance to disclose prior investigations into the conglomerate, which included allegations of money laundering and share price manipulation.

Gandhi vowed to raise the issue during the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, reinforcing the opposition’s commitment to demanding justice and transparency. The Congress party has termed the allegations the “biggest corruption scandal in Indian history” and accused the Modi government of actively facilitating unethical business practices.

Criticism has also come from other opposition leaders, including AAP, who joined the chorus calling for strict action. They emphasized that the controversy casts a shadow over India’s financial integrity and global image, especially ahead of critical international engagements like the G20 summit.

Election Commission Suspends Two Police Officers After Akhilesh Yadav’s Complaint of Voter Harassment

The Election Commission of India (EC) has taken swift action after Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav raised concerns over police personnel hindering voters during Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing bypolls. On Wednesday, the EC suspended two police officers for violating electoral guidelines after videos showed officers stopping voters from casting their ballots.

The bypolls are taking place across nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad, Katehari, Khair, Kundarki, Karhal, Majhawan, Meerapur, Phulpur, and Sisamau. Yadav posted on social media, alleging that certain communities were being barred from voting and requesting the Election Commission to investigate. He backed his complaint with video evidence, prompting the Election Commission to direct district election officers and police superintendents to verify the claims.

In response, the Police Commissionerate of Kanpur Nagar suspended two sub-inspectors, Arun Kumar Singh and Rakesh Nadar, for their misconduct. The commissionerate confirmed the suspension in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and assured that it would remind all officers to adhere strictly to election guidelines.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took serious note of these allegations, stressing the need for a fair and impartial election process.

He directed Uttar Pradesh election officials to promptly address complaints, ensuring that no eligible voter would be prevented from voting. Kumar emphasized that they would not tolerate any biased behavior or malpractice.

After the suspension, Akhilesh Yadav urged voters, who had previously been stopped, to go and cast their votes again.

Maharashtra Sees 32.18% Voter Turnout by 1 PM: Will It Surpass Last Election’s 61.4%?

As Maharashtra’s assembly election progresses, the voter turnout till 1 PM has reached 32.18%, with early signs of a potentially strong showing in the state’s democratic exercise. Despite this, Mumbai’s turnout remains noticeably lower than the state average, reflecting a regional variation.

Turnout Breakdown Across Maharashtra

By midday, the urban heart of Maharashtra, Mumbai, saw a 27.73% voter turnout, with suburban areas faring slightly better at 30.43%. In contrast, the state’s rural districts are leading with much higher participation. Historically, afternoon voting rates have seen an uptick, which may increase the final tally closer to last election’s numbers.

Key Constituencies Witnessing Voter Action

Among the constituencies with significant early voting activity, the rural areas of Aheri and Armori in Gadchiroli posted impressive turnout figures, both exceeding 30% by 11 AM. In Mumbai, the constituency of Worli recorded 14.59%, while Mahim showed a slightly higher 19.66%. Thane’s Kopri-Pachpakhadi, represented by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, registered a voter turnout of 18.22%.
