Stock Market Holiday on November 20 for Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024?

India’s primary stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, due to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. Trading across equity, derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments will be suspended for the day.

The decision aligns with the state government’s declaration of a public holiday to facilitate voter turnout for the elections across 288 constituencies. Vote counting is scheduled for November 23, 2024, with results expected later that day.

Impact on Commodity Markets
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed during its morning session, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, evening trading will proceed from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM for non-agricultural commodities, with select agricultural commodities trading until 9:00 PM. The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will close entirely on November 20, advancing the expiration of contracts scheduled for that day to the previous trading session.

Market Performance Ahead of the Holiday
In the trading session on November 18, 2024, both benchmark indices closed in the red. The BSE Sensex dropped 241.30 points, settling at 77,339.01, while the NSE Nifty fell 78.90 points, closing at 23,453. Sectoral indices, including Nifty IT, Pharma, and Healthcare, saw significant declines.

With this being the third stock market holiday in November, regular trading will resume on November 21, 2024. This schedule ensures minimal disruption while allowing stakeholders to participate in the democratic process.

Supreme Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Malayalam Actor Siddique in Rape Case

The Supreme Court of India has granted anticipatory bail to Malayalam actor Siddique in a rape case filed against him by an actress. The allegations date back to 2016, with the complaint filed eight years later in 2024. The court, while providing relief, directed Siddique to surrender his passport and fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The bench, comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, emphasized that delays in reporting incidents of sexual assault should be assessed in light of the trauma survivors often endure. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Siddique, argued, “There is an eight-year delay in filing this complaint. Siddique is a public figure and will cooperate with the investigation.” Consequently, the Supreme Court granted him conditional bail, mandating his availability for interrogation while ensuring compliance with investigative procedures. The allegations against Siddique, rooted in the Justice Hema Commission Report, highlighted systemic exploitation in the Malayalam film industry, with the complainant accusing him of assaulting her at Mascot Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala Police have alleged that Siddique obstructed the investigation by deleting electronic evidence and social media accounts. Earlier, the Kerala High Court denied him anticipatory bail, citing the gravity of the accusations and the need for custodial interrogation. The court also noted that delays in reporting sexual harassment often stem from significant emotional and social challenges faced by survivors. This case has reignited discussions on accountability and victim rights in the film industry, with legal experts advocating for a balanced approach that upholds survivor dignity while ensuring a fair trial. The Kerala Police continues to monitor Siddique’s cooperation as the investigation progresses.

Chhagan Bhujbal Faces Tough Re-election Battle Amidst Vendetta Politics

MUMBAI: Chhagan Bhujbal, a prominent figure in Maharashtra’s political landscape and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), finds himself in an unexpected battle to retain the Yevla seat in Nashik district. Once an undisputed leader, Bhujbal’s re-election bid has become mired in vendetta politics, fueled by both former allies and Maratha activists.

Bhujbal’s political journey took a major turn in 2023 when he split from NCP leader Sharad Pawar and backed Ajit Pawar’s entry into the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. This move, coupled with his controversial remarks during the Maratha reservation agitation, led to tensions with Maratha leaders like Manoj Jarange-Patil, who has called for Bhujbal’s defeat. Maratha activists have also mobilized against him, accusing him of disrespecting their community.

The Yevla constituency, home to 3.2 lakh voters, is divided along caste lines. Marathas form the largest voting bloc, with OBCs, including the 25,000-strong Maali community to which Bhujbal belongs, making up the second-largest group. Bhujbal’s rhetoric against the Marathas, including mocking their reservation demands, has alienated many voters. “He mocked us at public meetings. We want him to lose,” said Ambadas Bonate, a Maratha voter from Yevla.

In response to the mounting opposition, Bhujbal remains confident. “I have the support of several Maratha leaders in Yevla. Besides, I brought water for irrigation through a 165-km canal, solving a major water issue in the region,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Bhujbal family is also seeking revenge in the neighboring Nandgaon constituency, where Sameer Bhujbal, Chhagan’s nephew, is contesting against Shiv Sena MLA Suhas Kande, who defeated Chhagan’s son in the 2019 elections. Sameer, campaigning on the slogan ‘Bhaymukta Nandgaon’ (terror-free Nandgaon), accuses Kande of using violence and intimidation to win votes.

With the race in Yevla heating up, the dynamics of caste and political loyalty could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of this high-stakes electoral battle.

Encroachment and Slum Redevelopment Take Center Stage as Three Senas Clash in Magathane

The Magathane constituency in Borivali East is witnessing intense political rivalry. The area, known for its mix of housing societies and SRA buildings nestled between narrow roads and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, is at the heart of a heated battle among the three Senas—Shiv Sena, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The key issues dominating the campaign include encroachments within the national park, poor water supply, and the rehabilitation of slums.

Magathane, with over three million voters, is a blend of residential societies bordering the national park and slums, creating significant challenges in infrastructure and urban planning. Encroachments inside the park have become a major point of contention among candidates, as residents face severe road traffic issues due to narrow lanes and poorly maintained infrastructure.

Prakash Surve, the two-time sitting MLA from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, is seeking re-election, highlighting his track record in addressing local issues. “I have worked tirelessly for the people, whether it was slum redevelopment, improving water supply, or securing the Borivali-Thane twin tunnel road project. The decision is now in the hands of the people,” Surve stated, emphasizing his focus on redevelopment and in-situ rehabilitation for affected families.

On the other hand, MNS candidate Nayan Kadam criticized both the Mahayuti and MVA for focusing on short-term solutions like the Ladki Bahin Yojana while neglecting long-term job creation. Kadam highlighted that SRA projects, particularly the Devipada redevelopment, have stalled since 2016. “The current MLA has failed to address the issues; our party has been actively supporting residents, whether in SRA buildings or during the COVID crisis,” Kadam said.

With the BJP strong in the area, following the 2024 Lok Sabha win by union minister Piyush Goyal, the battle for Magathane will be a crucial test of local governance versus promises of fresh leadership.

Sharad Pawar vs. Ajit Pawar: A Clash of Generations in Baramati’s Final Rally Push

Baramati witnessed a high-stakes political battle between the Pawar cousins, Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, on Monday. Sharad Pawar, leader of the NCP, rallied behind his grand-nephew, Yugendra Pawar, advocating for a generational shift in leadership, while Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra’s Deputy CM, urged voters to focus on continuity and development.

Sharad Pawar, addressing a rally for Yugendra, a political newcomer at 32, emphasized the need for fresh energy in Baramati. Sharad Pawar praised Yugendra as a capable candidate and emphasized the need for a new generation to lead Baramati.

NCP MP Supriya Sule, also Sharad Pawar’s daughter, added to the momentum, criticizing Ajit Pawar without naming him directly. “Did we invite the ED and CBI to Baramati?” she quipped, pointing to alleged corruption under Ajit’s leadership. Sule praised Sharad Pawar’s legacy, citing his contributions to education, agriculture, and industrial development in Baramati.

On the other hand, Ajit Pawar, speaking at a separate rally, dismissed the generational argument, emphasizing the development projects he has brought to Baramati. “In the past five years, I secured ₹9,000 crore for Baramati’s development,” he stated. Ajit appealed to voters’ sense of progress, saying, “Let’s continue this journey of growth.”

Ajit accused opponents of vote-buying with unfulfilled cash promises, making Baramati’s race a fierce contest over its future. As both Pawars fight to secure their legacies, voters must decide the future of Baramati’s leadership.

Eknath Shinde Slams MVA for Halting Development and Corruption

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has intensified his criticism of the previous Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, accusing it of stalling major development projects and fostering corruption. Speaking at rallies ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections on November 20, Shinde described the MVA as an “anti-development government” that prioritized political gains over public welfare.

Shinde accused the MVA of delaying projects worth ₹8.89 lakh crore, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, causing job losses. “The MVA will be remembered for halting progress,” he remarked. They made an unnatural alliance driven by the greed for power,” he remarked in Pune.

Shinde highlighted his government’s success, including 124 irrigation projects, farmer insurance expansion, and raising women’s aid to ₹2,100 monthly.

Shinde emphasized his administration’s focus on welfare, asserting, “We are a government of action, not excuses,” from day one.

He accused the MVA of corruption during the COVID-19 crisis, alleging mismanagement of funds, including body bags and food supplies.

The Mahayuti alliance, led by Shinde’s Shiv Sena, BJP, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, is contesting against the MVA coalition in the elections.

Shinde expressed confidence in securing voter support, stating, “People will stand with the Mahayuti because we deliver results, not excuses.”

The Election Commission will announce the results for all 288 constituencies on November 23.

Maharashtra Elections 2024: Final Campaign Day Showcases Fierce Political Battles

MUMBAI: The final day of campaigning saw political heavyweights engaging in high-energy rallies, with Mumbai turning into a battleground of voter engagement. The Mahayuti Alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, faced off against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led an electrifying bike rally in Mumbadevi, drumming up support for BJP candidate Shaina NC. Covering key areas such as Kamathipura and Mumbai Central, the rally underscored development promises. Meanwhile, Congress candidate Amin Patel countered with his own rally, joined by party stalwarts like Sachin Pilot.

Aaditya Thackeray, a prominent MVA leader, held rallies in Mumbai, including Worli, where his party faces tough BJP and MNS competition. His efforts focused on retaining the Thackeray bastion.

BJP’s Atul Bhatkalkar used a roofless auto-rickshaw for his Kandivali campaign, engaging residents alongside Bhojpuri star and MP Nirahua. The day culminated with a 1,000-bike rally.

Congress leader Aslam Shaikh criticized the Dharavi redevelopment project’s execution, pledging to prioritize displaced residents and address community concerns effectively.

The campaign finale reflected the intense rivalry between alliances, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral battle. The results, to be announced on November 23, will determine the political direction of Maharashtra.
