Chhath Puja: Celebrating the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya with Faith and Devotion

Chhath Puja, a revered festival primarily celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, honors the Sun God (Surya) and the Chhathi Maiya (Goddess Usha) for blessings, prosperity, and health. Known for its rigorous rituals and community spirit, this ancient festival is a way of expressing gratitude towards nature and seeking blessings for family welfare and prosperity.

The four-day celebration typically takes place six days after Diwali and follows a sequence of elaborate rituals that devotees adhere to with great devotion. It begins with a phase called Nahay Khay, where participants purify themselves with a ritualistic bath and prepare a simple meal. The next day, Lohanda and Kharna, involves fasting from sunrise to sunset, culminating in a meal after sunset made of rice pudding (kheer) and chapatis, symbolizing purity and simplicity. The third day, known as Sandhya Argha or evening offering, is central to the festival, where devotees stand in rivers or water bodies to offer prasad (offerings) to the setting sun amidst folk songs and prayers.

The final morning, Usha Arghya, sees devotees making a final offering to the rising sun, marking the end of the festival and lifting their fast. Women in the family primarily lead these rituals, but the entire family often participates, reflecting a communal harmony that Chhath Puja emphasizes.

The significance of Chhath Puja lies in its devotion to Surya, considered the source of life and energy. The festival is not only about spiritual upliftment but also has a scientific and health-oriented purpose. Standing in the water and fasting is believed to detoxify the body, purify the soul, and create a deep connection with nature. These rituals underscore a sense of resilience, dedication, and reverence for life-giving forces, making Chhath Puja one of the most spiritually intense and ecologically mindful festivals celebrated in India.

During Chhath Puja celebrations, communities come together to sing traditional songs and share stories of devotion, creating an atmosphere of communal love, resilience, and respect for nature.

Mumbai: Abu Azmi, Samajwadi Party president in Maharashtra, criticized the Mahayuti government for diverting funds meant for public welfare.

Azmi alleged that Rs. 70,000 crore in corruption occurred under the current Mahayuti government, with more cases expected.

The Mahayuti alliance, comprising Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP, faces growing scrutiny as Maharashtra’s election day nears.

Azmi emphasized that the Mahayuti government misappropriated funds meant for infrastructure and development projects for personal gain. He believes this corruption has hindered Maharashtra’s growth.

Azmi, who will be contesting the Mankhurd Shivajinagar assembly seat, is up against prominent opponents: Shiv Sena’s Suresh Patil and Nawab Malik from the NCP. The battle in this constituency has become even more heated with both Shiv Sena and BJP members opposing Malik’s candidacy. Despite this, Malik remains confident about his prospects, projecting a strong win for the NCP.

Meanwhile, political campaigns are heating up in Maharashtra, with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance — consisting of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SCP) — aiming to reclaim control from the Mahayuti coalition.

Ajit Pawar will face his nephew, Yugendra Pawar, in Baramati, setting the stage for a major family rivalry in the upcoming Maharashtra elections. This election has garnered significant attention, with both sides expecting a tight race for this key constituency.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections will take place on November 20, and results will be declared on November 23. This election serves as a critical test for the ruling Mahayuti coalition and the opposition MVA alliance as both sides battle for influence in Maharashtra, one of India’s most politically significant states.

BJP Leader V Muraleedharan Confident in Shaina NC’s Victory in Mumbadevi Constituency

BJP leader V Muraleedharan has expressed strong confidence that Shaina NC, the Shiv Sena candidate from Mumbadevi, will make a significant impact in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. Muraleedharan highlighted the substantial progress achieved under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai and Maharashtra, pointing out that the government’s focus on development will resonate with voters.

In a conversation with ANI, Muraleedharan emphasized, “Shaina is going to make a big impact here. The progress that Mumbai and Maharashtra have made over the past three years will reflect in this election. He further asserted that the BJP-led government has prioritized development in Mumbai, making it the only government with a clear vision for the state’s future.

Muraleedharan also rejected the opposition’s chances, particularly Congress, stating that the people had already rejected the party’s campaigns in previous elections. He noted, “In the Lok Sabha elections, Congress could only secure 100 seats despite heavy campaigning. This time, too, Maharashtra will reject their efforts.”

Shiv Sena has fielded Shaina NC to contest against the incumbent Congress MLA, Amin Patel, who has represented the Mumbadevi seat since 2009. The Mumbadevi constituency is part of Mumbai’s Lok Sabha seat, and Shaina’s candidacy comes as part of a broader strategy by the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) in the 2024 Maharashtra elections.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections will occur on November 20, with results scheduled for November 23. The BJP and Shiv Sena coalition, Mahayuti, aims to perform strongly, and Shaina NC is set to play a pivotal role in the Mumbadevi race.

The Nifty 50 index opened at 24,489.60 points, marking a minor decline, while the BSE Sensex was down by 0.16%, trading at 80,248.60 points in early hours.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, commented on the long-term effects of Trump’s pro-business agenda, stating that initiatives like “America First” could strengthen the U.S. economy. However, he also warned that aggressive policies, such as imposing heavy tariffs on imports, could spur inflation and disrupt global markets. This outlook adds a layer of caution for investors globally.

In India, the sectoral indices displayed mixed results. While Nifty Auto, Pharma, IT, and FMCG stocks showed some gains, Nifty Bank, Metal, and Private Bank indices experienced declines.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have continued to drive market sentiment as they have been net sellers for several sessions.

In corporate news, Mahindra & Mahindra, Trent, and Lupin are set to announce their quarterly earnings today, providing fresh insights that could shape market trends moving forward.

Asian markets also showed varied reactions, with Japan’s Nikkei dropping by 0.4%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Taiwan’s Weighted Index posted gains. Despite the U.S. rally, investors remain cautious, focusing on upcoming earnings reports and global economic shifts.

Trump’s Victory Poised to Boost India’s Export Opportunities Amid China Trade Shift

As former U.S. President Donald Trump secures another term in office, Indian economist Suriya Narayanan suggests that his policies may positively impact India’s export landscape, especially due to heightened tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump has indicated plans to impose significant tariffs on imports from China, which could encourage the U.S. to turn to India for various goods, potentially benefiting India’s agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and technology sectors.

Trump’s re-election aligns with India’s strategic interests, as his administration aims to reduce dependency on Chinese supply chains. This shift is likely to open up new trade avenues for India, with agro-based and pharmaceutical products poised to meet U.S. demand. Additionally, India’s established role as a primary pharmaceutical supplier to the U.S. may strengthen further under Trump’s anticipated tariff policies.

Narayanan highlights India’s geopolitical advantage as well, with both Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to deepen the Indo-U.S. partnership. Trump’s stance on energy independence and fossil fuel prioritization could stabilize global energy prices, benefiting Indian importers and consumers. This stability may extend to the arms and metals sectors, where increased U.S. demand for infrastructure and defense supplies may favor Indian exporters of metal components and other related products.

Moreover, Indian-American voters have shown strong support for Trump’s approach to border security and economic growth, further bolstering the outlook for trade collaborations. With India positioned as an alternative to China, experts anticipate significant growth in sectors such as textiles, auto components, and consumer electronics, as well as a potential influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India.
