Arvind Kejriwal Urges Delhites to Avoid Firecrackers This Diwali for Health Reasons

New Delhi: Ahead of Diwali, Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and former Chief Minister of Delhi, has once again urged residents to refrain from bursting firecrackers. He emphasized that this year’s ban on fireworks is not about religious beliefs but is a necessary measure to safeguard public health.

In a press conference, Kejriwal stated that Diwali should be celebrated as a festival of light, highlighting the adverse effects of pollution from firecrackers, particularly on children’s health. He stressed the importance of health over tradition, asserting that the essence of Diwali lies in spreading light rather than smoke.

Kejriwal referenced opinions from the Supreme Court and High Court, which support the view that, due to pollution concerns, lighting diyas should take precedence over using firecrackers. “By choosing not to burst crackers, we are not doing anyone a favor; we are prioritizing our families’ health. Pollution affects us all, and our children will bear the brunt of it. This issue transcends religious lines; every life is important,” he remarked.

In addition to this message, Kejriwal announced that the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) has successfully disbursed salaries and Diwali bonuses to sanitation workers before the end of October. He praised the MCD for this achievement, noting that it marks the first time in 18 years that workers have received their payments on time, rather than facing delays of several months.

Kejriwal conveyed his heartfelt wishes to all sanitation workers and their families for a joyful Diwali, encouraging them to celebrate the festival with their loved ones.

Shiv Sena’s Bold Move

Mumbai: In a strategic move ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for November 20, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has announced its latest candidates, including prominent BJP spokesperson Shaina NC, who will contest from the Mumbadevi constituency on a Shiv Sena ticket. This decision marks a significant collaboration between the two parties, with Mumbadevi traditionally held by the Congress since 2009.

Shinde’s announcement on Monday included a total of 13 candidates, following the unveiling of 20 candidates the previous day. Notable contenders include Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora, who will face off against Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Aaditya Thackeray in Worli, and Sanjay Nirupam, who will contest from Dindoshi. Meanwhile, Nilesh Rane, son of BJP MP and former Chief Minister Narayan Rane, is set to run for the Kudal seat.

Eknath Shinde filed his nomination from the Kopri-Pachpakhadi assembly constituency earlier on the same day. He emphasized the electoral battle as a choice between “Vikas (development) and Vinash (destruction),” underscoring the importance of the upcoming elections. This sentiment reflects the ongoing rivalry between the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s NCP, and the Congress.

Both alliances are intensively campaigning to secure victory, with each party making strategic candidate choices to appeal to their voter bases. The stakes are high as the Maharashtra Assembly elections approach, with the counting of votes set for November 23.

As political dynamics shift, the alliance between Shivsena and BJP may reshape the electoral landscape, particularly in constituencies like Mumbadevi, which hold significant voter influence.

This election cycle showcases the evolving alliances and strategic nominations that will shape Maharashtra’s political future.

Soren v/s Soren: The JMM mess in Jharkhand

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Jharkhand CM and JMM leader Hemant Soren in January this year on charges of money laundering and land scam. Following his arrest, Soren resigned as the chief minister of Jharkhand and Champai Soren was made new CM in February. Champai resigned in July, Hemant was given bail in June and reclaimed his position of CM in the state. Champai Soren later joined BJP alleging that he was humiliated by leaders of JMM.

Hemant Soren was the incumbent CM of Jharkhand at the time of being investigated by ED. The ED has accused him of running a scheme to manipulate records, via fictitious transactions and forged documents, and acquired 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi worth crores. He skipped nine summons from the ED, and was declared by ED has “untraceable” and “missing” for 30 hours on January 29. On January 30, he arrived at his official residence in Ranchi, handed his resignation to Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan and was arrested by ED on January 31. Champai Soren was immediately appointed by Radhakrishnan as the replacement for Hemant Soren as CM. He took the oath as Jharkhand CM on February 2, 2024.

Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Hemant Soren on June 28 for a payment of a bail bond of ₹ 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount each. The court in its order- “broad probabilities do not specifically, or indirectly, assign the petitioner to be involved in the acquisition and possession, as well as concealment (of land)”. He was out after spending nearly 5 months in jail.

July 3, 2024, Champai resigns from his post of CM. Following this, Hemant Soren put forward his claim of forming the government to the Governor Radhakrishnan. It was accepted and Hemant is again the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. “A few days ago, I was made the Chief Minister and I got the responsibility of the state. After Hemant Soren was back, our alliance took this decision and we chose Hemant Soren as our leader. Now, I have resigned from the post of Chief Minister,” Champai told the media.

Another twist in the tale came in August. Champai Soren resigned from JMM and his ministerial role. He alleged the party of humiliating him. There is also an angle of spying on Soren. BJP state president Babulal Marandi demanded an investigation by a sitting High Court judge. Marandi said, “Two special branch officials have been arrested in Delhi and there are allegations of attempts to honey trap Champai Soren ji. This is a serious issue. Champai’s short tenure was marred with instability. His dissatisfaction was further fueled by abrupt cancellations of his government programs in July. He said that BJP is the only party serious about addressing the issues of tribals, Dalits and other marginalized communities in the state. He was also unhappy with infiltrations from Bangladesh in Santhal Pargana which he believes threatens tribal identity and local society. His strategic move to BJP is backed by his efforts to find solutions for these issues, and also because BJP embraced him with dignity.

Champai Soren will contest on a BJP ticket against JMM’s Ganesh Mahali in Seraikella. He is also known as the “Jharkhand’s Tiger” for his contribution in 1990s in getting a separate state for the region of Jharkhand, which was a part of (then) undivided Bihar. His allegations and the way JMM handled this Champai-Hemant CM situation can be pivotal in deciding the fate of the elections. Champai Soren’s decision to leave JMM and join rival BJP-led NDA leaves a dent in JMM and Mahagathbandhan as a whole.

It gave NDA a luxury to attack Mahagathbandhan on the grounds of ‘Dynasty Politics’. Hemant Soren is the son of former Jharkhand CM and JMM founder Shibu Soren. Dynasty Politics is one of the key talking point in Jharkhand politics. Champai Soren’s exit is also attributed to the same by leaders from the opposition.

Dynasty Politics Resurfaces in Jharkhand

Since the nominations have come to an end in Jharkhand, the political graph depicts a resurgence of familiar dynasties, with eight new candidates from influential families set to make their electoral debut. Notably, five candidates are representing the BJP, raising eyebrows amid the party’s critique of nepotism.

Babulal Soren, son of former JMM Chief Minister Champai Soren, is contesting from Ghatsila. His father, who recently switched allegiance to the BJP, is also a candidate from Saraikella. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP’s Jharkhand co-in-charge, defended this dual candidacy, emphasizing it honors a commitment made to Champai. However, local BJP workers have expressed dissatisfaction, citing Babulal’s limited presence in Ghatsila, where he is known primarily for his lineage and football tournaments.

Purnima Das Sahu, daughter-in-law of ex-CM Raghubar Das, is contesting from Jamshedpur East. Accusations have emerged that Das is unlawfully campaigning for her, given his role as Odisha’s Governor. Purnima, a postgraduate involved in retail, aims to continue her father-in-law’s legacy in politics, having originally hailing from Chhattisgarh.

In Potka, Meera Munda, wife of former CM Arjun Munda, aims to leverage her political connections and experience in the BJP, having been active since 1999. She expressed gratitude for the party’s support, although she faces a tough battle against JMM’s Sanjib Sardar, who won the seat by a significant margin in 2019.

Other notable candidates include Satrughan Mahato, brother of a sitting MLA, and Tara Devi, stepping in for her husband, who has health issues. Additionally, Nishat Alam, wife of jailed Congress minister Alamgir Alam, is contesting from Pakur, bringing the family’s political legacy into the election despite ongoing legal troubles.

Political analysts are observing this trend closely, as it underscores a persistent reliance on established political families amid calls for broader representation. Critics argue this signals a lack of genuine democratic choice, with veteran politician Ajoy Kumar stating, “The dominance of family names undermines the principles of merit and representation in politics.”

Maharashtra Elections: BJP and NCP Clash Over Mankhurd Seat as Campaign Heats Up

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has created ripples within the Mahayuti alliance by announcing Suresh Krishna Patil, popularly known as Bullet Patil, as its candidate for the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency. This decision follows the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) nominating Nawab Malik, igniting tensions between the two parties in the ruling coalition.

Nawab Malik, who filed his nomination on Tuesday, stated, “I am very thankful to (Deputy Chief Minister) Ajit Pawar and other NCP leaders for their confidence in me. I am confident that this time we will win the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency.” Malik previously served two terms as an MLA from Anushakti Nagar and is banking on the Muslim vote, crucial in Mankhurd, which is currently held by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi.

BJP’s Kriti Somaiya reinforced the party’s stance on social media, asserting, “Mahayuti’s official candidate from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar is Bullet Patil. We will fight to defeat candidates supporting Vote Jihad and Terrorism.” This reflects the BJP’s strategy to capitalize on communal sentiments as the election nears.

The nomination deadline for the assembly elections closed on October 29, with both major alliances, the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), making last-minute adjustments. The MVA comprises Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). For the upcoming polls, the Congress is contesting 101 seats, Shiv Sena 96, and the NCP 87, while the BJP will contest 152 seats, Shiv Sena 80, and the NCP 51. There are still four seats undecided, and the final day to withdraw nominations is November 4.

The stakes are high, with nearly 8,000 candidates vying for 288 assembly seats, and the elections scheduled for November 20, 2024. The results will be announced on November 23. Given the intense rivalry between the BJP and NCP, especially in Mankhurd, the elections could potentially reshape the political landscape of Maharashtra.

In past elections, the BJP emerged victorious, securing 105 seats in 2019 and 122 in 2014. As the electoral battle unfolds, party dynamics within the Mahayuti alliance will be crucial in determining its success.

New Taliban Rule: Women Banned from Praying Aloud Together

In a move that further curtails the freedoms of Afghan women, the Taliban has issued a decree prohibiting women from praying aloud in the presence of one another. Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, the Taliban’s minister for the propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice, announced that women should not recite the Quran audibly when with other women. This restriction is rooted in the belief that a woman’s voice is deemed “awrah,” which means it should be concealed and not heard in public, even among fellow women.

Hanafi reinforced the severity of this decree, arguing that if women are not allowed to call the Takbir or Azan—the Islamic call to prayer—they certainly cannot sing or listen to music. This ruling raises serious concerns among experts regarding its potential to stifle women’s freedom of expression and further marginalize them in public life.

Increased Restrictions on Women’s Public Speech

This latest decree adds to a troubling pattern of restrictions imposed on women since the Taliban regained power in 2021. Recently, the regime mandated that women wear full-body coverings, including face veils, while in public. Female healthcare workers, who are among the few Afghan women allowed to work outside the home, face severe limitations on their interactions, particularly with male relatives. A midwife in Herat shared her frustration with Amu TV, stating that they are prohibited from speaking at checkpoints or discussing medical matters with male relatives in clinics.

While the specifics of how this new rule will be enforced remain uncertain, it aligns with the Taliban’s ongoing efforts to suppress women’s rights and freedoms. As these restrictions multiply, the plight of women in Afghanistan becomes increasingly dire, drawing international concern from human rights advocates.

The Taliban’s Ongoing Oppression of Women

The Taliban’s history regarding women’s rights is alarming. Amnesty International has documented several oppressive measures, including:

– Banning girls from attending secondary school
– Limiting women’s access to work and education
– Enforcing stringent dress codes
– Arbitrarily detaining women and girls for alleged “moral corruption”
– Contributing to an increase in child, early, and forced marriages

The continuation of such policies highlights a troubling trajectory for women’s rights in Afghanistan, raising alarms worldwide about the implications for women’s autonomy and safety.

Karnataka High Court Grants Interim Bail to Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa in Renukaswamy Murder Case

In a significant development, the Karnataka High Court has granted interim bail for six weeks to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is currently in jail due to his involvement in the Renukaswamy murder case. The decision was made by Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty, who approved the bail to allow the actor to undergo necessary surgery.

The court’s ruling came after hearing detailed arguments from Darshan’s legal representative, senior advocate CV Nagesh, and state public prosecutor P Prasanna Kumar. The state presented medical reports regarding Darshan’s health, submitted in a sealed envelope, from doctors at Ballari Central Prison, where he is incarcerated, and from the head of the neurology department at a local government hospital.

Nagesh argued that the actor has been suffering from numbness in both feet and requested permission for him to have surgery at a private hospital in Mysuru, assuring the court that he would bear all associated costs. However, Kumar contested the request, pointing out that the medical documents lacked details on the expected duration of Darshan’s hospitalization and suggested that the surgery could be performed at a government facility.

In response, Justice Shetty noted that the state does not have the authority to dictate an undertrial’s medical treatment location, referencing Supreme Court precedents. The court, however, inquired why Mysuru was chosen as the surgery location, suggesting that a doctor in Bengaluru could evaluate the urgency and need for surgery.

Despite the opposition, Nagesh maintained the request for the procedure to occur in Mysuru, while Kumar proposed that Darshan undergo a medical assessment by a state-appointed board.

Darshan’s initial bail application, submitted on September 21, had been denied by a sessions court, prompting him to appeal to the high court for interim relief to receive medical treatment.

The background of the case involves the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of Darshan, who allegedly sent inappropriate messages to Pavithra Gowda, a co-accused in the case. This incident reportedly incited the anger of Darshan, leading to Renukaswamy’s murder. His body was discovered near a stormwater drain in Sumanahalli on June 9. According to police reports, Raghavendra, another accused associated with Darshan’s fan club, brought Renukaswamy to a shed in Bengaluru under the pretense of a meeting with the actor, where he was subsequently tortured and killed. The post-mortem indicated that Renukaswamy died from shock and hemorrhage caused by multiple blunt force injuries. Police have identified Pavithra as a principal instigator in the murder, claiming her involvement was critical to the planning and execution of the crime.

Tensions Rise: Canada Accuses Amit Shah of Authorizing Violence Against Sikh Separatists

In a developing diplomatic crisis, Canada’s Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison confirmed to The Washington Post that Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah allegedly authorized actions against Sikh separatists in Canada. This statement comes amidst escalating tensions between India and Canada following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistani activist, which has led to a severe downturn in bilateral relations.

During his testimony before Canada’s Parliament, Morrison revealed that Canadian security agencies have gathered evidence linking a senior Indian official to operations targeting Sikh separatists. Although he did not provide detailed evidence, he acknowledged that he identified Amit Shah in response to inquiries from a journalist. Morrison’s confirmation adds weight to accusations made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police regarding Indian government involvement in widespread criminal activities in Canada.

The Indian government has categorically denied these allegations, branding them as “preposterous.” External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar condemned the targeting of Indian diplomats by Canada, stating that India has long highlighted the presence of organized crime in Canada without receiving adequate response from Ottawa. Jaishankar asserted, “We completely reject the manner in which the Canadian government targeted our High Commissioner and diplomats,” emphasizing that India will take a strong stance when its national integrity is at stake.

The diplomatic fallout intensified after Canada identified Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in Nijjar’s killing, prompting India to recall its High Commissioner and five other diplomats. Relations have plummeted, with accusations from New Delhi that Ottawa has failed to act against Khalistani extremists operating within Canada, which New Delhi claims undermines India’s sovereignty.

Nathalie Drouin, National Security Adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, testified that evidence presented in a meeting linked Indian agents to criminal activities in Canada. She accused India of breaching a confidentiality agreement made during talks, claiming India went public with accusations against Canada shortly after their discussions.

Amidst these allegations, the U.S. has also intervened, charging an Indian national with directing a foiled plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent pro-Khalistani figure, further complicating the international dimensions of the situation.

The unfolding events signify a critical moment in Indo-Canadian relations, with both nations grappling with allegations that could reshape their diplomatic engagements for the foreseeable future.
