Copper Futures See Marginal Decline Amid Weak Domestic Demand

MUMBAI: Copper futures experienced a slight dip on Wednesday, as the price dropped by 0.02% to Rs 822.35 per kilogram, driven by reduced market activity and weak demand in the domestic market. The decline occurred on the Multi Commodity Exchange, where the copper contracts for December delivery fell by 20 paise, with a trading volume of 8,309 lots.

The muted demand in the spot market led participants, particularly speculators, to trim their positions, impacting the futures prices. Experts suggest that weak industrial demand, coupled with a slowdown in key sectors, is contributing to the overall reduction in copper prices. This decline in copper futures is part of a broader trend observed in the commodities market, where fluctuations in demand and global economic uncertainties continue to influence pricing.

As copper plays a crucial role in various industries, including electrical, construction, and manufacturing, its price movement often reflects broader economic trends. Investors and industry experts are closely monitoring these developments for any further signals of price instability.

Deloitte Survey Calls for Simplification of Income Tax Return (ITR) Process and TDS Framework

NEW DELHI: A recent survey conducted by Deloitte has revealed that a majority of income tax filers in India are advocating for a more simplified approach to filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs). The survey, focused on the challenges faced by individuals, recommends a streamlined ITR process, making it easier for taxpayers to compute incentives, deductions, and address the complexities around the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) framework.

The survey emphasized the need for a “one rate one section” approach to TDS, where payments are classified into two to three distinct, non-overlapping categories, and each section is assigned a single rate. This would significantly ease the compliance process without leading to a loss in tax revenue.

Another major recommendation is to eliminate the mandatory issuance of Form 16A. The data is already available through Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS), making the form redundant.

These suggestions aim to reduce the compliance burden for taxpayers while maintaining the efficiency of tax collection in the country.

Gold Futures Rise on Strong Spot Demand

MUMBAI: Gold prices saw a slight increase on December 4, 2024, with futures trading up by Rs 37, settling at Rs 76,940 per 10 grams. This price surge is attributed to the steady demand in the domestic market, as speculators built fresh positions in anticipation of further price increases.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for February delivery rose by 0.05% or Rs 37, reflecting an active market turnover of 12,338 lots. Analysts suggest that the increase in positions by market participants is a key driver behind the upward movement in prices.

This positive trend is consistent with the global scenario, where gold prices have experienced a gradual increase, driven by rising global demand and growing uncertainties in financial markets. The strengthening of gold futures, coupled with the ongoing festive season, continues to fuel optimism among investors.

As the demand for gold remains robust, both in India and globally, experts predict that the metal may maintain its upward momentum in the short term.

Traffic Snarls at Ghazipur as Rahul Gandhi Heads to Violence-Hit Sambhal

New Delhi: The Ghazipur border on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway witnessed a massive traffic jam on Wednesday as Congress workers rallied in support of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The leader was on his way to Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, a region grappling with communal tensions after a controversial mosque survey sparked violence. Despite prohibitory orders, Gandhi insisted on meeting the victims’ families.

Addressing the media, Gandhi said, “As the leader of the opposition, it is my constitutional right. I should have been allowed.” He was accompanied by Congress’ Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who stated, “Rahul ji is on a constitutional post and has the constitutional right. He should be allowed to meet the victims’ families.”

The Uttar Pradesh Police justified the heavy barricading, citing security concerns, and extended Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in Sambhal until December 31. However, Congress workers defied restrictions, chanting slogans and waving party flags, exacerbating traffic woes for commuters.

The unrest in Sambhal, triggered by claims of an ancient temple at a Mughal-era mosque site, has brought the region under intense scrutiny. Gandhi’s visit aims to highlight what the party describes as the BJP’s divisive policies.

IndiGo Sues Mahindra Over ‘6E’ Trademark in New BE 6E Electric SUV

India’s leading airline, IndiGo, has filed a trademark infringement case against Mahindra Electric, contesting the use of “6E” in Mahindra’s upcoming electric vehicle, BE 6E. The airline asserts that “6E,” integral to its brand identity, is well-recognized through services like 6E Prime and 6E Flex.

Filed in the Delhi High Court, the legal dispute comes as Mahindra debuts the BE 6E electric SUV on November 26, 2024. The vehicle, featuring a futuristic design, advanced interiors, and fast-charging capabilities, is built on Mahindra’s innovative INGLO platform and targets a competitive price range of ₹20–25 lakh, rivaling models like Tata Curvv.

IndiGo argues that Mahindra’s use of “6E” may cause confusion and dilute its brand. Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi represents IndiGo, while Mahindra’s response emphasizes the difference in industry focus—aviation versus automobiles. The court’s next hearing on December 9 will determine the case’s progression.

The BE 6E is a key addition to Mahindra’s electric lineup, featuring a 60-79 kWh battery for up to 450 km range, rapid charging, and luxurious interiors. Despite the controversy, Mahindra remains committed to its launch plans, reflecting its bold stance in the EV market.
